I got this from another site but I know y'all would want to know this.
It came from a bass site. Hope y'all don't mine me posting this.
Justin Harvey well know tournament angler from Gaffney SC set a new White Perch State record Sunday 12/18/05 weighing in @ 2.40 lbs or 2lbs-6 ozs. beating the old record by 8 1/2 ozs. set by Chris Epton in 1989. Justin was fishing in Lake Murray around the big gap when the fish hit. He was fishing with Ronald Moss a well know fisherman and guide.
SCDNR has been notified and put on notice. Offical results will be coming soon.
Ledgebuster stated "When the fish hit I though I had a Stripper" After fighting the fish for several minutes the huge Perch was exhausted and surrendered.
Ronald stated " that fish will weigh over 2 lbs and may be a state record"
The fish was 17" long x 5" wide x 2 1/2 " thick
Ledgebuster and Ronald had went down to fish for Stripped Bass but when the perch started biting they quickly switched over and started Perch jerking.
Having a limit of White perch (60) weighing 42.60 lbs that is all most a 3/4 lb average.
Rod,reel, boat, motor, lure, line, ect. is not know at this time.

It's all fun and games until they open the trunk.
A buddy and I were fishing on Wylie recently and started catching White Bass. Along the way we started catching White Perch mixed in. There is little difference in these two fish. One is native to SC and the other is a not so recent migrant to our open lakes. The Perch is the migrant. The most notable difference is that the White bass has lateral lines from its head to its tail much like a Striper. The White Perch does not have these lines. Its sides are plain silver color. The Perch also can live in salt water and at times prefers the salt water to breed. Another difference is that the White Bass will school and drive bait to the surface. Making for good White bass fishing in the fall. The Perch on the other hand is mostly a bottom fish preferring water 30 feet or less. They grow to the same sizes I have caught both recently and with the new SC White Perch record at Murray I was interested in this fish.

One thing I found funny about the White Perch is that its in the True Bass Family and not the Perch Family.

Pete and i was down at wateree awhile back and he caught a big fish we thought at first was a huge white perch. closer examination showed it to be a white bass, and a nice one. we had a few white perch in the cooler so we laid em out side by side and i took a photo of em so the differences would be apperant but i havent had the film processed yet. in the next few days i hope to do so so i can post em. thats the first white bass ive seen in several years at wateree or anywhere else. they used to be fairly common but dont seem to be so anymore.

What is Perch Jerking. How do you do it? With a spoon type of plug off the bottom?....

we'll I'm in no way a fisherman for them white perch. But when most the folks I know that fish for them things (perch) when they say there perch jerk'n that just means there catch'm. I have a friend that fish's for them and he uses worms, minnows, jigs, what ever he has and when he finds them, (now don't tell know one this) but he takes and filets and scales one cut the meat in strips and uses that for bait. He says that way he can catch as many as 6 fish before he rebaits. He catches them all year long and does real well in cooler months.![]()

The way I like to fish for them is much like crappie fishing except I rig the line with a casting or drop sinker. I tie the sinker on the end of the line and then move about two or three feet up the line and tie on the swivel and hook. Perch are mostly bottom dwellers and the drop sinker rig gets the minnow down to dangle above the sinker which is on the bottom bouncing along. The round egg shaped drop sinker doesn't hang up often. It works for me. I have seen guys using this same rig with worms too.
thats the same way i drift fish for crappie in cold water. id been using 3/4 oz bell sinkers on the 9ft crappie rods. this year im gonna use the same weights i striper fish (2 oz inline trolling sinkers with a swivel) and use my striper rods. they are soft tipped enough i should be able to see the bites of a crappie. hopefully next week ill be able to jump on them rascals and tick off king crappo cause of his troop losses to the beast and rango.....Originally Posted by Iamfishing
