Umbrella Rig Photographs
Here are my umbrella rig setups. I just started using these. The last trip I caught two hybrids at the same time on the same rig, people say you can catch 3 or 4 per pole at the same time. I also hung a huge striper that dragged my boat up the lake, but we will save that story for later! My umbrella rigs are made by strike king and are very economical. I bought them from bass pro shop for $4.99 each plus shipping. Then mine are rigged up with 1/8 ounce red and white round head jigs with 1/0 Sickle hooks. If you notice the center line should be much longer than than the outer lines which are 12". So I make my center line, 24 to 36 inches and place a larger bait. On one I use a bigger bucktail on the other I use a plastic 5" blue back herring. The inner lines are only 4" and beleive it or not this rig never tangles. You drop it down while the boat is moving and thumb the line off the reel. If you use about 60' of line using 1/4 or 1/8 lures it will dive to around 20 to 25 ft at 2.2 mph make it feasable to use your outboard, and if your outboard is to fast there are ways to slow your boat (5 Gallon Buckets etc...). This rig when used for crappie is rigged basically the same, but best results are when the crappie are in the river channel chasing the minnows. The bigger bait in the center is to simulate a larger fish chasing the school, and this is the one the first striper normally hits, the other bites normally come on the outer 12" lines. When I caught the two at the same time, they actually do get hooked multiple times, which makes it a little difficult when trying to remove the hooks, also you cannot or least I couldn't use a net with this setup, you better get your hands on the fish, because it will make a huge mess that will take hours to unhook. I hope this helps. I have limited knowlege but I will share to anyone who listens, although most will probably be saying "Shut the H*** up!). Also I am not working for about 2 months and I am open for hosting or going on daytime fishing trips! Also by using a lighter test line on the rig you will not usually lose your rig, just a jig which you can quickly replace and get back into the water. Last trip I fished at Clarks Hill at Mimms Branch off of Little River and after 4 hours I only got hung once. This is a fun way to fish, especially if you get tired of sitting in one spot. I troll with my outboard at 2.2 mph, make wide turns and stay in 30-70 ft of water. This rig with the weight I use runs about 20-27 ft with 60' of line out. Carl

Looks like it would be a MAJOR CHORE just getting it in the water without tangling everything up!

You would be suprised!
I put each one of these in a garbage bag, when you get to the lake, you take them out and drop them in the water just as they are in the picture, they slowly invert and I normally pull them up to the side of the boat and look at them but they never tangle, the inside lines are about 4" and are about 5 inches from the outer ones, so they don't tangle, and the outer ones that are 12" are over 12" inches apart, so that only leaves the center one to tangle and if you drop it straight down they weight of the center one keeps it centered. I was to very suprised the first time I used them. I have made modifications over time though to help, because at first my inner lines were 6" inches long and they tangled went to 4" inches and it solved the tangle problem. I also stagger them at slightly shorter or longer distances on opposite sides to help out there also. They are very neat in the water and all you have to do is drive until they bite! I will post pics tommorrow if I have any sucess for the linesiders!
I'll catch them all next time!!!!!

Thanks for sharing. An interesting concept.

What kind of rod an line are you using for this contraption??

I thought there was a restriction on the number of hooks per line. You may want to check the SC regs before the game warden checks you. I think you can have all the teasers but only one hook plus a trailer hook. Not for sure but you should check to be sure you are legal

we use to use dummy jigs on the upper lines, no hooks, and just one hook on the big trailing line, this was in the chesapeake.

There are no regs on the number of hooks per rod in S.C.
