Default Should I replace reel?

I have a Quantum Great White 50 saltwater reel that I had since the late 90s and have caught many fish on it. Couple weekends ago the anti reverse went out on it. The reel still works fine but no anti reverse. I talked to a guy from the reel repair place in Monroe, NC. He said he doesn't work on Quantum reels because Quantum doesn't make replacement parts for their reels. The reel cost between 50 and 60 bucks. Should I should ship it to BPS Springfield to have it fixed or bin the reel for a new one?

You could call the service dept and find out an estimate (?!?) but I'd think a regular service charge, parts, and shipping and you'd have the new price of your reel invested again. I'd take the reel apart myself and see if I could find a broken piece and try ordering it.

If it was my big cat rod, I would replace the reel--you never know when the big one is gonna latch on and I want my rig to be ready just in case.

I repair reels and have repaired reels for folks on this site. Anti-reverse pawls are the bugg-a-boo of reel. The Great White is NOT a top of the line reel. I don't charge what a reel repair man might charge because I don't do it for a living. Count on at least $17.00 total shipping to and from, $14.00 service charge on the reel just to open it up, plus the price of the pawl about $3.00-5.00. You might be better off to buy you a new reel or go to Flea Bay and fined you a used one. I've seen some nice Penn 4500-7500 for around the same price you would be putting out on the Great White. If you are around the Rock Hill area, I will be glad to take a look at the reel.

Whipper, I be done tole you what to do with that junk...........one day you might hang a fish where you gona need somethig to back it up. You seen what happend to good tackle in a hard fight. 200lb ray tore up a Penn 525mag reel That same fish(or much less of one) would take that Great White and spank you with it!

Get you a Dawia Emblem Pro 5000 , fill it up with 50lb power pro and be done with it.

MY Emblem does! Got 2 spools, one with 30#PP for mullet, pups and blues, the other with 50#PP for anything else. I landed a 80lb blacktip with the 30 with no problems. Same rig I landed my 61lb drum with.

Treed, let me know about shooting a deer or a hog, we seem to have a great plenty of both this year.
