Default Hunting Island, SC Big Pond Report 8/16-today

Went down to Hunting Island this weekend to get away from all the hassle of work and etc to relax and maybe catch a few fish. Relaxin was kinda hard since 2 out of my 3 reels I brought down went kaput. The anti reverse on the Quantum Great White decided to retire after 8 yrs of service and my old man decided he (without the experience) could cast my Abu 6500 elite without asking me and birdnest it worse than wut Butthead did. I heard it fluff up and crack off 50 yards away. The fish decided to cooperate though. Caught 6 flounder on Saturday morning in Johnson Creek during incoming tide on Electric Chicken Bass Assassin Swimbaits and 2" Gulp Shrimp. Junk fish (chopper blues, sharks, ladyfish, needlefish) were blitzing in the surf and chasing bait all over the whitewash. Caught some sushi blues on an Berry Spoon that some how got into my Saltie box. Fished the surf again later that afternoon during low tide; managed to pull in a tire size ray on JR's old Penn Drumstix and a bunch of dinky pompanos on broken Gulp shrimps. Sunday morning a guy fishing next to me @ Johnson Creek was just tossing out a spoon when he hooked into a Spanish Mackeral and landed. I left my tackle box at camp so I couldn't get a spoon to catch its twin. Things were slow on Sunday. Maybe fish go to church. Only things I caught were pinfish gallore and their cousin the pigfish. One pigfish I was reeling in got clobbered by something as the only thing I brought in was its head. Got a seagull caught on my Alvey setup. Poor bugger!! Ended the day with a 19 inch Gray Trout. Fished this morning and caught 7 flatties on minners and Electric Chicken Swimbaits and low and behold............................................ ..............2 puppy drums to break up the duldrum on whacked up pinfish and bunker I caught in the cast net.

Sounds like a great mini-vacation. From the post I assume alot of the fish werent eatable (?!?) but still fun catching anyway. Congrats on your trip.

Sounds like alot of fun. You catching all those from the bank and beach or were you boating?

I went to Charleston the other week and found a park on Mt Pleasant that goes out into the salt marsh between Mt Pleasant and Sullivan's island. They had a nice fishing pier at the end at one of the larger creeks. I happend to bring my light tackle rod with me, so i tossed it out with a crappie jig on it. Had lots of hard bites, but no hookups. the folks along the pier were catching little brim-sized fish on cut shrimp. Not sure what they were. Looked kind of like spot. Next time I'll take some shrimp so I can get my little boy on some of those fish.

I'm just starting to get into fishing the beach when I go. I've got a lot to learn though. I plan to take my yak next time, but the tides worry me some. Don't want to get stuck in the middle of a mud flat when it goes out.

Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We are going with you also." They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing.

And we act like this Nightstalking thing is new.

For some excitment, read the next verse. A special guest arrived, they filled their coolers and had a fish fry on the beach...in the morning. My kind of people.- Bowfin

Bowfin,

They were probably either pinfish of hogfish. Just my 2 pennies.

On the bank. I got a boat and kayak but corossion and rough seas are good enough reasons not to take the boat out and vengeful ocean creatures to not go out in the kayak. Sharks aren't the only critters that want to get their mouths on me.
