Default On the Hill at Modoc Friday night

David Clark and I put in at Modoc due to the low water at Dordon and the Hill. We weaved in and out of red clay islands to reach the main channel, then south and back into a large cove. We caught a 2 lb Striper (released), a really chunky LMB of about 3 lbs. (released) and 3 Crappie, biggest being 1 lb. 2 oz. After about 4.5 hours of very slow action we had enough and headed in. Had plenty of bait under the lights and lots of bigger fish but just not much luck. Don't know if it was that 1/2 moon hanging up there or not. Regret to say David outfished me last night.

Hey Carl...it's been 2 weeks since I was last on Clarke Hill (until this morning) and I was told it's down another foot now. It looks like it too. Fishing is tough now but things will start changing before too long I hope. August is usually so hot and humid you cant hardly get outdoors but atleast the temps have dropped back into the mid 80's for the first few days of the month allowing us to spend a little time drowning a few minnows.

I just have had my fuel pump replaced on my motor so hopefully in another month or two (whenever the season begins to change) I'll be set to go for some more great nightstalking. We'll have to hook up a few boats and do a Clarke Hill stalk one of these nights when the crappie strap back on their feed bags!

Just let me know, I'm most ready to go anytime. David said last night that only 3 ramps were open on the S.C. side. Dordon is one but you still have to run off the end of the ramp to launch so I don't think it will be long until we're down to rwo ramps. Modoc is a long narrow one but at least there is some water there right now.

Carl, I learned to fish on Clarke Hill. I fished it hot and heavy during my teens all of my 20's. In my early 30's I started fishing Russell simply because it's right next door which gave me alot more fishing time and alot less riding time. Being a new lake, Russell was excellent for crappie fishing and even though the fish were alot smaller in general than at the hill limits came regular and fairly easy to come by. Long story short, I hardly ever went back to the hill since I began fishing Russell. After fishing on the hill the past few weekends it really hurts seeing the lake as low as it is, and has been for many years now. Back in the day, campgrounds would flood after big rains and shorelines were always backed up in the bushes all along the edges. I dont think we'll ever see Clarke Hill back at full pool level again. For whatever reason, the hill still produces excellent fish of all species, I guess it just has what it takes. It sure would be alot nicer if that lake stayed as full as Lake Russell does though.

I'm like you bowman, I cut my teeth on the hill. It is sad to see it looking like it does. When I had to start fishing Russell last year it was like starting over learning how to fish. Fishing for crappie is the same no matter what lake but the Hill and Russell are so different from each other. The more I fish Russell I'm starting to learn where and how to catch the fish and the size of fish are good now. There are still days of hit and miss on Russell where as at the Hill you can catch crappie every day, but that might have something to do with all the years I fished at the Hill.
I guess the only way we will be able to keep fishing the Hill is if they extend the ramps into the water more, but with the water level I don't know if that will help ether.

Stumphunter, bet you are glad you didn't drive down Friday night after the slow night we had. Is there water in Greenwood? Kicking around the idea of pulling up to there or Russell for maybe afternoon/nitestalk combo. During the week would be fine or even on a weekend. If its a weekend I might be able to get David to come up with me otherwise I'd have to come up by myself. Right now I'm getting ready to tear into/rebuild the trim/tilt unit on the toon. Hopefully it won't be down long. Could bring the skiff up if needed. Or maybe I could invite myself to fish off your boat. Almost getting as bad as Beagler aren't I?

Carl, let me know when you would like to go and we will use my boat and go to Greenwood for a evening and do some night fishing. Can show you some spots while we are there. Wife will be out of town this week so I have to stay close but anytime after I'm open for it.
