    Default silicone for screw holes in transom


    is Marine Grade Silicon a must? I didn't see the cheap marine silicone today at True Value, but they did have the marine silicone that was $22/tube. I bought some 100% silicone that is for metal/aluminum, which says it's 100% waterproof (after proper curing time). Will this work, or must I go with marine grade?

    3M 4200 or 5200 would be better IMO
    GO BIG ORANGE !

    I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.

    isn't the 5200 permanent once cured? not sure that would be too smart for me.

    Silicone is silicone...I suspect "marine grade" is a marketing term. I assume these screw holes are occupied - ie have a screw in them? Any of the products mentioned are more than good enough to keep water out. If this is a permanent sealing/no need to ever pull screws back out, then the stainless steel or aluminum JB Weld slathered on the screw threads would be perfect.

    Marine grade silicon is much more durable when submerged than the average stuff you get in a tube. Most silicone sealants are not recommend for use where they will be submerged, but the 4200 and 5200, in addition to be much tougher sealants, are recommended for full time immersion.
