I've made some similar to this. Used ½" PVC , irrigation tubing, etc for the "limbs".

Yes, they were near the edge of the creek channel on a flat. Great spot to place structure. I will definitely be looking for more depth changes like this. One other cool feature of the garmin is the maps show the creek channel, where it turns, and where it meets points and gets close to shore. Also, you can set the garmin to highlight a certain depth if you like. You can see by the green color on the pic. I had it set for 15 to 30 feet

The two lakes I fish the most are not mapped. I've mapped one, slowly getting the other one done.
I've set the depth shading also, makes it really easy!

    Fishing Ranger,
Thanks for starting this thread! I'm burning up my eyes trying to read every detail of every post.

I just installed a Garmin 94SV, and I took it out for the first time yesterday. My SV images looked nothing like yours, even when fishing under a bridge, with the pilings right next to me. Mine is "kinda muddy" with nothing looking very distinct. Regular sonar and DI looks pretty good, but still nothing like yours!

When I was trolling little curlytails, I did mark a few rocks or stumps (not sure) on my SV screen, and that made me feel better, so my unit is working.

Couple of questions for anyone willing... What is the difference between the 93 and 94 SV? I thought it was only the included charts, but could it be the frequency, too? I only see 250 and 455, I don't see 800.

I got the 94SV because it was on sale for $599... I didn't think it would matter, as I can always buy charts, but maybe it does matter?

    Any thoughts, anyone???

    What transducer did you get?
When you set it up, did you choose the transducer, or auto select?
    Have you changed any settings?
Changing the brightness and contrast is a must. I think I'm missing something else also. Sometimes changing through the day, sunny to cloudy - different bottom composition, etc.

I think it's the CV52HW or something like that. It's the one that came bundled that I've read does not have the dedicated DI pizeo.

I let it auto select most of the functions. I did choose 455k, as I thought it would give the best imaging.
I have not changed anything else.

Am I reading correctly, that in this unit the brightness and contrast are how you adjust the sensitivity? I'm going back out in a few hours. I will try playing with it, and will report back. Just knowing that someone is willing to help is very encouraging!

    Thanks!

Wait... I just looked it up...

Each Garmin echoMAP CHIRP 94sv comes with:
    • Garmin echoMAP CHIRP 94sv
    • CV51-TM CHIRP ClearVu/SideVu Transducer(12-pin) with Temp and 20' Cable

The 12 pin transom mount transducer with temp sensor provides 500W CHIRP ClearVü/SideVü (CHIRP 260/455 kHz) and 600W CHIRP (Mid-band CHIRP 80-160 kHz) Sonar. This technology provides you with ultra-clear images of what is beside and beneath your boat and is optimized to provide you with the best performance in rough waters.

So does this mean, I won't be able to get the great images others do in fresh water? The max this transducer goes to is 455 kHz. Maybe I'm just wasting my time?

I'll try to take some screen shots today, and will report back, but this is somewhat of a bummer.

The strange thing, is that when I look the 'ducers up, the 51 costs a lot more than the 52. I wonder why, if it has fewer options / frequencies? Maybe it has more wattage, to penetrate salt water?

Here is a pic of the screen in demo mode. It doesn't say what transducer. I guess I'll know more in a few hours.

I would definitely change some settings, whatever those are. Do you have cell service where you fish? If so, get on garmins site, and download the manual for your unit, unless you brought it. Mine came with a quickstart guide, I had it laminated, and keep both the manual and guide in the boat, as I'm still learning also.
That screenshot looks like the same one on mine, just a generic on all of them.
Don't be afraid to make changes, you can always factory reset, and start over, I've done it a few times!

Yesterday was pretty interesting. I set the unit to 75/65%, and started cruising at 2,5 MPH, and I got much better images than before. I also tilted my engine up when scanning, and that definitely helped my left side imaging.

In the end, the images were not nearly as clear as some I've seen here, but they at least helped me to see structure I haven't seen before. I had a guest with me, so we focused on catching fish, but I plan to go back and mark structure on the GPS and also make some track/charts, if I can figure out how. Will definitely need to bring the manual with me this time.

While fishing, I made a couple of recordings of my side scans. I downloaded Home Port, and now I can see them again.

But I have a couple of questions -
    1. Is there any way to get a snapshot from a saved recording, so I can post it here?
    2. Does Home Port crash a lot for any of you? Mine seems to crash and need to be restarted every time I try certain functions.

BY THE WAY... I worry that I'm kind of hijacking this thread. Should I start a fresh thread, or is this all part of the conversation?

    Thanks!

    -Tony
