Thank you rdjj71m . Man I have to dig in on this . Changing names helps describe what it is but seeing it at will is better. I will get into it and let you know if I am really following what you are describing .
I change to the descriptive name on the unit but my shots have the original assigned number. I now nothing of thumbnails... I will get back to you...

Just checked out the check button for the first time. All I got was chart info because I deleted all images after I edited all waypoints. My edited waypoint names now give me all info at a glance, but it will be nice seeing that snapshot also. From now on I will stay ahead of the game. Thanks rdjj71m . Terry
By the way, I only edit waypoints on the unit at home.
When I edited waypoint names it didn't automatically transfer to the corresponding snapshots. How do you guys do that? Terry
IceNitro, I have not checked to see if I can change the name in "Waypoint Management" and still see the snapshot. I know I can go on my unit and change it (as stated before in waypoint management "only") to a brush pile "icon" tree "icon" etc. and it works fine. If you change it in HumminbirdPC or any other place on the unit it will not work, and it is GONE forever. As stated it will not work if you remove the snapshot and .dat file.
Sometimes I have lost or deleted a waypoint by mistake. If you made a snapshot and still have it, you can open the .dat file in HummViewer and it will give you the gps coordinates. That is the only way I know you can open the .dat files.
I will see if the name can be changed on my unit and let you know. I have a 998 now and will be installing a 999 in a week or so, I will test that software.
I guess my question should have been ; How do you edit waypoint names and the corresponding snapshot name simultaneously?
I have a memory stick and a file on my pc with all old shots and coors...
IceNitro, the problem is once you change the "icon" or "name" if it was not completed in "Waypoint Management" on your HB Unit (All is LOST). If you have not changed the "camera icon" or "Sxxxxx" number (S = SnapShot) in HumminbirdPC, then you can reinstall the snapshots to an SD card and reinstall in your HB Unit. You then should be able to move the cursor over the waypoint and see the "thumbnail snap" and push "check" and view full screen. Then you can change them.
Changing SnapShot name: You CAN NOT change SnapShot name. When you "Edit" a waypoint in Waypoint Management you can change the name and icon, when you do this the program will note the change in (I assume) the .dat file. You can still see the snapshot when you move your cursor over the waypoint, but the SnapShot file name will not change.
The problem I had was I changed a lot of my waypoints in HumminbirdPC before I know if you did that you would loss the ability to go back and link the SnapShot. When I say a lot I mean 1000-2000.
I agree you can rename and change icon in HumminbirdPC , which is easier than on your unit, but at times I still would like to see what was marked. We have a lot of high water in the spring and last spring we had lakes a 20-30ft over normal. All this water current caused a lot of our waypoint to get washed down lake somewhere. So if I can't find one I go back and see what was it and could it have been washed away.
Hope this helps!
Now I have seen the chart thumbnail snapshot you guys spoke of... Awesome...
Man that's a lot of shots to lose rdjj71m; had to hurt.
Thank you gentlemen for all your help and putting up with my ignorance.
Good fishing to you all... Terry
In my HB file management system on my PC ... I have separate folders for HB Screenshots ...:
*1 folder contains HB screenshots that still have the correct file structure to load back into the HB unit and view on the unit ...
*1 folder contains HB screenshots that I've changed or lost the correct file structure to view on the the unit ... But still have the .PNG screenshot that can be viewed on PC or used in the forums ...
