North Point 8/20-8/21
Well, I finally have a chance to write a detailed report. Today was a blow day with good 6 foot waves sending a group back to Missouri, sorry fella`s I wish the weather would have cooperated
.
Saturday morning leaving at 5, I set up in the fog and rain between the first and second hill right on the line. The first rod down 30` is my morning stud, a lighted "J-Plug". The one I have is the "Metallic Superman" although I don`t think it really matters in the dark. Setting the second rod it was hit bringing a 14# King to the boat. I was pointed East and when we hit 60` a second hit came bring a 9# King in on a white on white "0" dodger flie down 35`. I turned back in as we reached 90 and took 4 more hits landing 2. I turned it back East as we reached 50` and the lead took a hit as we reached 90`. A 9# Steelie hit a Silver Streak "Smurf" on the lead and didn`t make it to the boat until we reached the 110` mark. We were out of the fog and in started to lighten up so I decided to take it out rather than turn towards the shallows. I had action all the way out to 160` and turned back in. We stayed between 130` and 150` from the line to a mile South, the lead and `riggers set in the top 50` took most of the hits. The best rod was a banana rig down 48` which accounted for 5 fish. Fireline dipseys 150` out on a # 3 setting with Lil` boy blue/smoke, and a clown behind chrome took a few hits as well. We ended up with their 3 man limit and mine as well.
On Saturday afternoon I ventured out to the same 130` mark and we took two fish soon after set up, one of which was a decent 4 yr. old king again tipping the scales around 14 #`s. Then it was a slow troll out to the depths, I didn`t see any consistent marks until we reached the 200` range and that is where we had the best action, all the way out to 230`. There we had a mixed bag of confused fish, I took steelie`s down 90` and lakers on the lead, with dink kings and coho all over the place. As it slowed I brought it back into the 170`s where the fish were again active, the dodger flie bite that I had almost lost confidence in was once again working and the clown/ chrome down 53` and banana rig down 60` were the two that took most of the hits. 22 fish found their way to the cooler, 5 of which were on the small side but were in no condition to return to the lake, yes we dragged them for a while
.
On Sunday with a 6 O`clock start, the morning glow program was put on the wayside and I dropped lines at 160` and kept it pointed East. The high dipseys (150` Fireline on a #3 setting) and the `riggers down 52` and 60`, of which I kept changing the dodger flie combinations, were where the bulk of the action went. Clown/ chrome, Lil` boy blue/ smoke, banana rig, and green behind white were the most productive. Again the best action was from 200` to 230` where at times the screen looked like a fireworks display with marks from 50` down to 150`. I dropped a `rigger down to the 125` depths and although I switched the bait numerous times it never took a hit. It was a little choppy that far out, and with the wind, boat control wasn`t the best and we luckily made it without any major tangles. We ended up with their 3 man limit and into mine as we had to pull lines early for the long ride back from the depths.
On Sunday afternoon I set around 160` and didn`t have any action until we ventured out past 200` when a 14# laker hit a "Smurf" out on the lead. The second fish to make it to the boat was another slob of a laker tipping the scales at 16#`s. It wasn`t by any means lock and load and we had plenty of down time, as we trolled back in from the depths. The best rods were a mystery/white and a white "Hot Spot" with a half white and mirage flie down 48` and 52` respectively. I did my first dusk fishing of the year and we managed to land a 2 yr. old and a nice 4 yr. old. I put out my Morning Stud "J-Plug" which I guess will remain as the morning stud since it never took a hit that evening. I also had out a glow green dolphin and a glow Fishlander green Easter egg spoon all of which never took a hit.The smaller king hit a white/ white "Hot Spot" on a `rigger down 30` and the 4 yr. old hit on a #3 Fireline Lil` boy blue/ smoke 100` out, we also had a hit on the white and mirage / white "Hot Spot" combo but it was a hit and run. So much for the glow program. We ended up with 13 fish with the two lakers and 2 kings leading the way in size, a 9# steelie found it`s way to the boat as well. We had our fair share of dinks mixed in.
All weekend I tried to keep my speed right around 2.0-2.2 at the ball, with the current, I had my GPS surface over ground speed up as high as 3.0. Some guys ran faster and they had their spoons working better than their dodger flie combos.
