I have always heard that the Mattaponi River is a great place for ringperch. Have anyone here ever fished their?
i was hoping to find a thread on ring perch as well because i have difficulty catching them in significant numbers. I haven't fished the Mattaponi but i have heard some GREAT stories from Lake Chicahominy. According to VDGIF, tidal rivers are better so maybe the mattoponi is a great place. How do you find and catch them in the first place?!
Don't tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don't tell them where they know the fish.

When I lived in Mechanicsville, I used to go down to the Mattaponi in Aylett about 7-8 times a year...
I found some good success with the Perch in late March to Early April....what would you like to know?
Tony on page 34 of our forum I have a post with a pic of the river from the bridge by Aylett and the ramp there. They were catching them there last year, after I posted that 2 locals here came back with a nice mess and good sized.

Thinking about, it there's really not much to say except find one of the deeper holes in the bends of the river down from Aylett and drop a nightcrawler down there
I caught 3 citations last year, all filled with roe. One day I hit it just perfect and caught them on every cast.....I THOUGHT I'd found a secret hole one day until the next time I took my father back there and found 3 boats sitting on top of it.
