Default High Point Lake

After fishing the much hyped Raystown Lake for the previous 3 weekends with only a few small crappie,I ventured to High Point Lake for the first time ever Sunday. No more Raystown for me! Caught crappie on almost every cast. The other casts resulted in nice perch and 2 bruiser northerns. The crappie were hitting minnows in a shallow cove. Water temp was 58 degrees. Tried jigging with no luck. Very impressed with the size and quantity of fish. Be back this weekend...if not sooner!Keep your lines tight and your minnows lively!

Are you willing to share your info? I live in somerset and have been catching decent crappie at somerset, but have trouble finding them at the clearer lakes like high point. I'm retired this year and have been out everyday for the past 2 weeks. I went up to high point this afternoon but only caught sunfish with twisters/jigs. I can be reached at foy@shol.com

Default High Point

Never mind sharing info with a fellow fisherman . I was there yesterday and caught 12 keepers . I caught several smaller ones. The bite was good until the thunder started in the distance and completely shut down after the few sprinkles we got.Try the upper end of the lake. There is a small cove/flat on the left hand side of the upper lake.Try floating minnows about 4feet deep. The fish keep moving around in the cove but usually within casting distance. I've tried jigging but only seem to catch bass and northern Talked to a guy from Johnstown who said he had pretty good luck trolling twister tail grubs in the upper end(chartreuse).Stay about midway the cove and fish all around. They are there! Maybe I'll see you up there sometime. Look for the red Tracker TX175.If you'd be interested in going along sometime;you can contact me at rebelrockdriller @aol.com.Good luck!

I think i saw you as i fished around the cove on the side of the northern launch just about the time the sprinkels started. I was wading in tennis shoes and i think i was wearing a yellow tee shirt. I did notice a tracker boat but i'm not sure what type it was.

If your trailering your boat a long way i do have a 14 foot sea nymph that i used to take up there all the time till the summer weeds started to get real bad. I'd gladly take my boat up there and meet you to save you dragging yours so far. I'm about 45 minutes away from there. If your new to that lake you should know the wind does get bad there at times. If you stayed after about 5 yesterday afternoon you saw how it can get and it does get worse.

Davy, how good is the crappie fishing at Somerset this time of the year? Do you fish any other lakes such as Donegal or Greenlick Dam? If so, Maybe we can hook up sometimes. I am pretty much all trouted out and have been spending some vacation time at my trailer in Mt pines resort.

About two weeks ago it got real good for me but it seems like it is winding down now with more bluegill action than crappies. I did not catch any as big as mentioned above at high point but did have some 12 to 13 inchs. When i first located some they averaged maybe 8 1/2 inchs but within a couple of days i would estimate they averaged 10 inchs. Compared to what crappies used to be at somerset (maybe 7 1/2 inchs for a big one) i was impressed this spring. I actually had stopped fishing for them there for quite a few years till last year i noticed the size had picked up. This past friday i kept 32 and most were over 10 inchs. Not sure what this cold wind did to them as this morning i waded and someone else beat me to the spot i wanted so i came home.

I hope to try at night for them once the spawn is over from the boat with a light and see how that works.

I went to greenlick one day and caught nothing but talked to a guy at acme dam who said they were catching nice crappies for about a one week period at greenlici. I did catch quite a few from acme dam but they were not big by any means. I haven't fished donegal lately.

It may be getting late for the shallow water bite--mabe this week will still be ok with the cooler mornings. I am going to try either tomorrow or Wednesday somewhere.

I'm probably stuck fishing from shore this week as were having a yard sale and i had to take everything out of the boat, pull it from the garage and set it outside. I was at somerset from about 11 till 3 today and kept 5 that were at least 10 inchs from the cattails.

I also fished for walleyes and although i caught none a guy 30 yards a away caught 2 legal ones and 2 short ones while i was there.
