    Default Cold water gils

Check out the " Ice is ready" on Iowa State Message board............
Nice gils , wish the Chowan would freeze over
Any thoughts as to where the gils go when the cold sets in? Deep water around structure , main rivers or the creeks? What bait, jigs, minnows , plastic ?

I mostly fish ponds. I look for deeper water and fish maggots under a float --works very well.

Do you fish on the bottom of the pond or a couple of feet off the bottom?

I usually start 6" to 1' off the bottom, but I experiment. Sometimes I put the hook right on the bottom, but that's usually only if I'm after shellcrackers.

We pulled a five gallon bucket of 8 to 9 inchers yesterday off of submerged cedars in 12 to 15 foot of water on a breakline.Dropped a waxie and a glow jig just above the tops and jig it agressively. Pretty soon youd get a red line coming up out of the brush and theyd smack it.We did this from 10am until 1:30. Ended up with a nice mess of fillets. These were the same brush piles we were pulling them off of this fall before it froze up.Tried the deep basin , but you had to have cover to find the fish.
