COULD BE A HYBRID CROSS, MAYBE BLUEGILL/ GREEN SUNFISH ?![]()
That's a freak of nature right there. It's exciting having a place to fish like that.
Congrats.
The Hound
That looks like a redear sunfish or what we call a shellcracker where I'm from. They typically get much larger than a bluegill. The record I believe is around 5 lbs. That's a nice one you got there! Congrats!
Those are them Iowa farm raised corn grown gills... very very big. Used to fish one of my dads co-workers farm ponds up in the Quad City area there... gills in his pond where longer then paper plates were wide.
Some of the biggest and best tasting fillets you ever ate. Miss Iowa fishing sometimes.
Fishin' fills the time until College football season
Nice fish!!! Reminds of a pond I used to fish when I was in high school, we were only allowed to use a fly rod and we couldn't keep the gills but every one we caught was that size. Thanks for sharing.
where was that buddies pond at

Midwest crappie has a pond fishing show that russ taped in indiana with Charlie Hilbreth about these georgia hybrids (indicated by the orange-edged fins).
I don't think Russ and Charlie caught anything that big though.
That's the biggest gill I've ever seen!!
Makes me wanna go dig a pond...lol
