I never noticed the mouth until you pointed it out. Whats throwing me off is the orange on the fin tips. It appears as a green sunfish but the mouth doesnt match one.

but, not real sure which persuasion the "other parent" is

Got all the makings of a Bluegill, but some of the markings and coloration of fin tips do lend one to think it may have a Green Sunfish hiding in the branches of its family tree :D (though, I do have my doubts about that, since the large mouth of the Green Sunfish "should" have been a dominant trait)

Probably only a biologist doing a DNA test could tell for certain. Heck it may even have several other species of Sunfish in the family generational mix.

Call it a "Brim" and that'll cover all the bases

    ... cp

If not for sure, catch another one and compare the two.

I think crappiepappy has come closest to saying what this fish is. I believe one of the parents of this fish was a hybrid sunfish (bluegill x green sunfish); the fish obviously is part bluegill, and the light-colored borders on the fins says green sunfish. Most bluegill x greens are males and they can reproduce. I believe a male hybrid probably spawned with a female longear sunfish. It's a little hard to tell in the photo but it look like the gill-cover ear is a bit long, and longears do have a lot of blue markings (in no particular pattern) on the cheek, like the fish in question does. If one of the parents had been a pumpkinseed, I would think the blue markings would be a bit more arranged (as lines.)

Thanks guys its been a mystery to me and was just wondering your opinions. My first though was Pumpkinseed/Gill. It has become a gill to me.

Looks like a GS X BG cross to me. It has some of the gill colors, and some of the greenie colors. The main character I look for on a greenie is the spot on the dorsal fin. I vote cross dresser
