Thread: fly fishing for bream

How many of you guys use a fly rod and flies to catch bream? What techniques do you use? I have a pond where last year, bream were always at the pier and just for fun, I took my dad's old fly rod and managed to catch a few but I was just messing around. This year, I would like to try something different. Do you have any suggestions?

I tie my on flies and on the lake back home in southern NC I use to wade aruond the grass, lily pads, and trees. Always did real well. I use a fly rod or bream buster with flies on the rivers too. I have to do that from the boat. Watch out with fly rods if your fishing two in the boat and operating a trolling motor...

up in here michigan I use small rubber spiders when they are on the beds, sometomes if they have been fished over hard add a short 1ft dropper with a very small sinking fly, kind of use the rubber spider as a strike indicator.

Using a fly rod is great fun. Once you get into fly fishing it's hard to fish any other way. According to the time of year and how aggressive the fish are at the time, I use rubber spiders, poppers, and an assortment of small nymphs (floating and sinking) to catch them. I have also used live crickets on a small wire hook over bedding areas with success.
Nothing like fighting a 1.5 pounder on your fly rod. Really gets the heart to pumping.

I went on a guided fly trip in the NC high country a few years ago and it was a ton of fun. Too bad there are no moving streams like that in my area! I have a flyrod that I assembled last year but used only twice. This year I plan on trying to catch bream with it. I have soo many flies that people have given me over the years that I have never used. It's time to catch some fish on 'em.

Does anyone have photos of the flies that they have been good for bream? Especially big bream!

I know everybody has their favorites. I like to use foam pushers (Dremel bugs) and spongy spiders mostly for my surface Bluegill flies. I use my Dixie Bug, Gill Getters, Jitterbees, Damselfly and Dragonfly nymphs, wet flies, among others for my subsurface Bluegill flies. I like to use scuds mostly for Shellcrackers (Redear Sunfish).

There are more but just about any fly that catches trout will catch bream . I mostly work the edges, docks, and other above and below structure on lakes and canals. One of the best ways I know to catch bream consistently on the fly rod is to match what they eat. Local naturals that you can find along the shorelines or ask about from a local bait and tackle shop, natuals like scuds, dragonfly nymphs, and damselfly nymphs. Best of luck :D.

yeah, i fly fish for brim. techniques: poppin bugs along banks, over beds. castin weed edges with black chenile spider (sinkin) . slow crawlin a bead head nymph over deep rock piles ('crackers). flippin minature cork, shot and hook with maggots along creek banks. careful: its habit formin!

Ya sure get some funny looks when people watch ya cast a fly rod from a boat. I use poppers, crickets, nymphs and small red worms. LOTS OF FUN!
