Thread: gulp maggots? Any good for bait???

I have seen and read about these things, Heck, I even came close to buying some the other day, but I figured I would ask the experts here prior to plunking down my $3.99 for a jar of them. Let me know if they work for you please, and how you rig them. I would really appreciate it as I would rather use them than grow my own like I did last year...

Dave, I don't know what these maggots look like (normal maggots I guess) but I use wax worms that "look" similar to maggots, and kill the BG. I use a samll hook and just tip it with a wax worm, or tip a jig with it. At Reelfoot Lake they seem to be the bait of choice most of the time.

Heck, tightwad, loosen up the pocket book and experiment a little. Get back with us on your success.

I use them. They are fine. I put one of them on and a "real" waxworm. If the fish steals the "real" one, I still have a chance on the fake. It is harder to get off. Add a few drops of "Anise" to the Gulp. Works fine.

Alright, I will come off a few bucks for the good of the board and give them a try . We are heading to a small pond back in the woods here next week to try them out. I am taking my fly rod as sI have a young fella going fishing that has never fished a flyrod before. Thought we would give thema try and see how we fare on a pond with no real fishing pressure on it. I think it will be good for him if he is successful right out of the box with a flyrod. I wanted to try something close to live bait that won't come off as easy when roll casting. Plus, they are a lot cleaner than the real thing too!!! I will, hopefully, be able to post some nic gill pics here soon.

Dave, live maggots can be cast on a fly rod, and they are deadly.

Any small, soft plastic will also work well.

A new youngin wih a fly rod - better stand back and stay clear.lol If he sticks with it and gets it down, he'll have the time of his life if the gills turn on. Good luck with him, and good job gettin him out there.

I remember that from when my grandfather taught me to fly fish!!!

I've used them in the spring for my grandkids but put a worm next to them bluegill will take the worm but maggots do work.

I've used the gulp shrimp in saltwater and they worked great.
