The bite starts January 1 and ends December 31.
They will hit jigs year round. You just have to find the depth they're holding at. For shellcrackers, that's generally near the bottom.
When does the shellcracker bite start heating up? Is it around the same time as the spawn or can the be caught consistently before then? Is there another method I should be trying other than dragging a worm or jig across the bottom in their usual areas.

might try some tiny pcs. a shrimp .....feeding on the bottom tends to a lean towards bottom dweller food items ....just saying
