Thread: Great day gill fishing

I haven't used the fish fry...but I have used the maggots,honeyworms,and nibbles. Stuff works. I usually use some type of jig or fly and tip it with one of the aforementioned baits.Never know what the best combination of the day will be...Also have used the powerbait grubs and minnows...caught fish with all of them....fun to experiment with.Have caught a lot of fish in saltwater on vacation with the gulp baits.

Gills are a blast! Great way to spend a work lunch hour. . I do catch crappie with them sometimes, usually smaller ones though.

You are so right. Gills can be so fun. I know this is a matter of opinion but would like to ask this anyway. I am in central Illinois and do not really know what is considered a "big" bluegill. (lengthwise) Anybody got a close guess?

big blue gills depend on how far north or south you are , a master angler award gill in Michigan has to be 10 inches long, most I catch run 5" - 7" the winter really slow there growth.

Around here a 6" gill is a good one a eater, a 8" gill is a big one and I release those. A mess of 9-11 inch gills is a dang beautiful thing and a lot of fun.

I have used gulp, and powerbait and love both. 99% of the time I use a black jig with a florescent green head and yellow & black eyes. I tip it with a berkley power wiggler most of the time but sometimes a chartreuse 1" grub.

Those fry work good and last for several fish. I bite the tip off when they start to get loose on the hook. Put them back on and keep going. I like them on a drop shot rig for deep water.

Slabbacks ... I am drop shotting with them also. Most fish come from 17-23 fow. I experimented with flo orange and luma/white. This day the orange was the preferred color of fish fry. I think that the little skinny tail is what makes them appealing.

Never thought of that. I have some yellow liquid dip, be a interesting test vs normal. Or maybe after the bite gets slow dip one and see if that brings them back to life...thx for the tip
