My son just moved to Shawnee from McAlester. We have fished Eufala for several years, but are looking for good crappie action closer to home for those 1/2 day trips we seem to have to take! How is Thunderbird action and where are some good plces to start? We have never fished the lake before! Any other recommendations close by?
The marina, twin bridges, fisherman's point...there are a lot of places people like to fish @ Thunderbird. Coming from your direction, I would start over in the stump patches around Little Axe. If you have a boat, you'll be able to find the stumps in whatever depth of water you need that time of year. For the spawn, you can run up Hog Creek, and in the winter/Summer, you can fish around the dam. Like Eufaula, some places stay muddy year-round, but the main body of the lake has a little better visibility (not clear by any means).

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the information.
How is the crappie population in Thunderbird? We are used to the action at Eufala and am curious if we can expect the same kind of great crappie fishing a Thunderbird! Also, being this close to OKC, does te lake get pretty crowded?

The lake only gets bad on the weekends when the ski boats and bass fishermen are out. During the week you can pick you spot, that is until the spawn is on then most of the top spots have folks there.
My experience this year has been interesting. I've caught a bunch of throwbacks (obviously last year's spawn), but when I catch a keeper, it's been a Eufaula sized crappie (bigger than usual for T-Bird). I think what's happened is that two years ago, when we got 40 days and 40 nights of rain during spawning season (you remember when Eufaula had closed parks and baseball fields were underwater), the spawn either didn't happen, or was patchy at best. There just doesn't seem to be many fish between dink and hog. T-Bird has been my primary lake for years, and this is the first year I've caught more throwbacks than keepers. The lake is NOT stunted, it just had one bad spawn. Next year all these dinks should be healthy keepers and the lake should be back to normal.

You've got an excellent place to fish right there in Shawnee; Twin lakes, the lake has a fishing marina and it used to be open 24/7. You have to purchase a permit, either one day or one year. The ranger lives there pretty close and can fill you in on the cost. I haven't fished there in 15 years. My wife and I have caught many fish there; crappie, catfish, perch, and bass. The crappie were never really big, but most were keepers.
This lake is west of Shawnee and you can get directions from anyone around the west side. Give it a try, lot closer than T-Bird.
Never, never attempt to dry out shad in a $1000 Maytag convection oven......... never!
You don't have to buy a permit for Twin Lakes if you live in Shawnee. At least, that was the case last year when I checked. I think you just have to carry a city water bill to prove your residency. The enclosed fishing dock is 24/7 on the weekend, but closes at 10pm Sun-Thurs.
