I was wondering if anyone is having any luck at lake hefner.
You can try your luck out there at the dam, along the rocks, when you see lots of cars around. But usually you can catch pretty good size crappie out there, either using slip corking or just cast and retrieve. For me I prefer cast and retrieve with a 1/8 oz tube jig.
Colors vary from one spot to another so, have lots of different colors to try out.
Good luck.
My Dad has been fishing Hefner the last 3 weeks. He has been doing really well. 30 to 40 Crappie in a couple of hours. He fishes from a float tube along the rocks on the dam. I talked to him about 4 days ago and he said he was catching them @ 40 foot deep. I didn't think you could catch them that deep but he knows what he is doing on Hefner. Double Silver Bobby Garland jig is the ticket.
Is your Dad using a depthfinder on his tube?
Yes, the crappie do stay around that depth, until it gets warmer and they move closer to shore. I have been fishing that lake for 10 yrs plus. My dad also fish that lake daily, when weather permits.
We would just use cast and retrieve, but we use 4lb line to cast out far, since the further it gets the deeper it is. Hefner gets deep to 70 ft at some areas.
i visited hefner on saturday for the first time and drove around the lake didnt do any fishing just kinda scoped the lake out and tryed and faild to find a bait shop to see if i could find one of thoes free maps of the lake but the boss (the wife) called and said that she was off work an hour early so that ended my exploringwhere is the bait shop for hefner??
i came across a little creek that ran in to hefner over by the dam it looked like a good place to fish during spawn for sandies and other fish
thanks Crappie Josh aka C.J.
always ready to go fishing
The bait shop you want to go to is run by Carl Jones. It is located on
9128 N. MacArthur and their store number is 405-722-3443.
Many crappie fishermen go there to buy rosie's and thier famous lightnin strike jigs.
I usually go there to look at the pictures of what people catch recently and I would buy some of the tube jigs there.
But yeah, they got all the slip corkin equipment for sale, just for crappie fishing and other baits as well. Carl Jone's son runs the store, since Carl's main store is in Edmond.
Their bait store in Okc is directly behind the 7-eleven store, in that plaza area, but if you do get lost, give them a call.
Also here is their website if you need more info..

I hope that helps.. Well, see you on the lake sometimes.
Good Luck

Hefner Lake
Jeremiah 16:16a "But now I will send for many fishermen," declares the Lord, "and they will catch them."
My dad has a fishing buddy by hummingbird which can attach to the tube, but he doesn't use it much on Hefner. He fishes the lake all the time so I guess he doesn't want to mess with the depth finder on the tube. I have one as well except mine had battery acid leak on it and it is ruined. Anyway. He ties slip cork knots on his line starting @ 18 feet and then ties one every 6 feet down the line. He uses 4 different colors for the slip cork knots and just counts them down. This is very effective for keeping your jig in the zone.
Montana Boy- That is a novel way to check the depth with the series of knots. Hey as long as it works and you stay in the fish that is all that matters.
