    Default Rod holder questions

I have read all the posts about rod holders that I could find. I do not understand how the rods stay in them. Can someone explain how the rods stay in when you get a fish on? It looks like they would fly right out.

I also need advice on what kind of holders to put on a Tracker Pro Crappie 175. If they have to be attached, where would I go to get them put on? I can't do it myself. I just want 4-5 on the boat. I don't want a spider rig set-up yet.
    Thanks for any advice,
    Patti

Patti, the rod holders are designed so that your rod will stay in the holder allowing you to be hands-free until you get a bite. Most allow quick removal if you do get a bite so you can take control immediately to set the hook. If by chance, you're not paying attention and a fish sets the hook itself, the rod holder's job is to prevent loss of the rod and fish.

Rod holders come in all sizes, shapes, and designs. There will be 2 speakers presenting their rod-holders at our get-together and you will be able to learn what holder will work best for you.

And if by chance you bring your boat and want one of us to help you mount the holders (Bee-Ready will be selling rod holders at the get-together) I'm sure we can get you fixed up and ready to fish.

Just let us know if you plan on bringing your boat, ok?

Stink pretty much summed it up well.

Most rod holders are designed so that the harder the fish pulls, the tighter it gets in the rod holder. I have been using them for 10+ years and only had one rod yanked out of it's holder by a big catfish. I was able to recover the rod with the help of other fisherman around me.

    Default holders

Thanks Stink, I don't think I can make it. Saturday is my husband's only day off so I understand if he just wants to veg out in front of the TV all day. I will try to convince him. Can you men believe that I have to convince HIM to go fishing! Poor little me!

I don't have the boat ready for travel yet. I need to get a ball put on my Tahoe, a spare tire, an anchor, etc. I will be hitting Wally World, Bass Pro, and Boaters World today...in that order! I can get a 10% discount at Bass Pro, but Wally World is usually cheaper than the 10% discount.

IF I do make it, ya'll be watching for a crazy woman weaving from side to side. That will be me looking in my rear view mirror making sure I still have the boat attached. I was 16 the last time I towed anything. (That was just a FEW years ago, now....Ah shoot, now the crappie won't bite cause they know I'm a liar!) I will let you know if I can make it and what I will bring.

So, I am off now to go shopping!

Gman, It looks like it would just slip right out. Must be some science to it that I just don't get! I will take your word for it. I will go looking today to see what I can find.

    Thanks,
    Patti

hey peke...how you liking the new boat?....Bass pro currently has two rod holders for less than ten dollars....they are not the best of the best quality but they work great...they are made to screw directly into your boat which i did not like so i bought u- bolts at the local ace hardware and attached them to my rails...they work awesome.....don't use them too much now that I have a blackwidow on the front...but a cheap way to get started and have four holders on your boat that you can take off when you are not using or when you get an upgrade.

    Hey Peke,

You normally match the type of rod holder to the type of fishing you'll be doing. When I'm drifting for catfish, I have rod holders (driftmasters) that hold my rods at a slightly upward angle. When a fish hits, they pull downward, thus preventing the rods from being pulled out of the holders.

When I spider rig, the rod holders I use keep the rods horizontal. Even then, I've had blue cats hit a jig and the rod refused to budge.

If you threw your line out so far that it was pulling straight out on your rod, then they would pull the rod out sometimes. But most of the time your line will be at a downward angle. Plus, when a fish hits, they generally head for the bottom, making it nearly impossible to pull a rod from the holder.

I've only seen one pulled from a holder and it was a line that was cast far out and the rod holder was bent slightly downward to begin with.

    Trust us, they work!

Congrats on the boat. Take my advice and don't skimp on the bling. If you have to wait and save up money for something, do it. You'll never regret putting quality stuff in your boat!

It sucks when cheap crap breaks on ya when your out on the water...been there done that...

LazyLakeDog, We haven't used it yet. We have to get the hitch finished and buy a bunch of stuff for the boat. I just need rod holders in case I need to put a rod down. I don't want to drill holes in the boat for the screw on type until I know what I want. Sounds like you had a good idea with the U bolts. I am not sure I understand how you did it.

    Okie Don,
Ok that makes sense. I have fished under the 69 Hwy bridge, but I don't know if I can do that any more. I know it's against the law, but people have been doing it for years. The 2009 Oklahoma handbook says on page 38, "Do not stop or anchor beneath bridges or in the channel. Violators can expect a swift and severe response." I see people there all the time. I wonder if anyone has been ticketed?

Anyway, I fish for crappie with ultralights and I seldom set the rod down, but I want a holder just in case I need to set it down. I would like to learn how to drift for catfish so I will need those kinds of holders too. Spider rigging seems like a very busy job. I cannot imagine juggling all those rods. Maybe one day!

OK, spare tire, 2 anchors, ropes, battery charger, net, and other stuff. I spent over $400 today and still don't have rod holders! Too many other things needed first. (Ya'll get that NEEDED part! )

Ah, but what a fun shopping day! Maybe by the end of March I will have the boat ready. Just remember I will be a new driver so stay out of my way if you see me coming......fish at your own risk! LOL

I have 32 BeeReady rod holders on my pontoon boat and I love them. Rod is easy to insert and setting the hook will remove the rod from the holder. I have never had a rod pulled from the holder when catfishing.
