Default Elk Hunting

Are any of you fishermen Elk Hunters? I was wondering if any Okies like to Elk hunt. I'm wanting to go this year and was looking for some input on where and when. I've been twice and killed once (a cow). I hunt with a bow, Muzzleloader, or a rifle. I know area 96 in Wyoming pretty well.

My Dad used to lease in the Wichita Mountains. The ODWC would allow an elk season usually every third year, dependent upon populations. It was a good time, and sitting on a boulder at sun up feels like you're in a different time and place than modern Southwest Oklahoma. But the only thing that kind of blew about elk hunting was skidding huge quarters down a rugged "mountain," (they're really more like glorified rock piles) over boulders and through plum thickets. But hey, it was damn worth it.

Thanks for the info jiggy. I tried to draw in for Oklahoma for a few years now with no luck. If you don't know a landowner you have to enter the draw and my luck has been null and void on that. I am wanting info from Elk hunters on where they like to go and these guys are more tightlipped than Tournament Crappie fishermen. And when it comes to that they may lead you down Big Jig road ha. Again thanks

Before I move here to Oklahoma, I lived in Colorado. In my 5 years there I elk hunted some public land to the east of Meeker. It was a place called Little Lost Park.

Now I'm a meat hunter and there are plenty of cows running around, but the key up there is to get off the beaten path. Plenty of out of staters there that will hunt not too far from their vehicles and camps. Your best bet is to use a 4 wheeler and get away from everyone.

If you want more info about this area, let me know.
