Default Top Water ACTION!

A builder I do work for has a strip pit with 7 miles of me. The Ice storm took alot of trees and laid them out everywhere. The guy warned me about the trees so I took a fully loaded chainsaw with me. This pit has some crappie in it, but locating them is a completely different story. It's full of bass and those great big 'ol blue gill. It's hard to NOT catch one. The bass are mostly on the small end so far, 2 lb's and under. I caught several blue gills yesterday and a couple of them went close to 7/8's of a pound. I only took my little crappie box with me and had no top water baits at all. I fished a jig under a bobber and can't count the times a bass took a hit at the bobber.

Today, I stocked up on top water stuff and plan on hitting it again first light. Daddy gonna have some fun. Maybe some day, I'll be able to get a graph (or camera) in that thing and have a look for the Crappie. Till then, high water at the lakes, means fast and furious fishing at the pit.

Good luck, I love seeing a big ol bass explode the surface as it nails a top water lure.

I have been a diehard Crappie chaser for years. I went to that pit this morning and had a blast. I had two bass that went close to 3lbs in the first hour. After that, top water action died off. Too mossy to try worms or crankbaits. Caught a few smaller ones with spinners. The Blue Gill didn't seem very hungry. I only caught a couple of small ones. It's the first time in a long time that I set out NOT intending to catch a couple a Crappie.

Sounds like you had a good time. I'm supposed to go pond-hopping tomorrow with some family, I hope we can be lucky enough to get a couple 3's or bigger, it's been a while since I've had anything that big on a line. Either way, fishing is always better than working.

What kinda top water do you use? I have been bass fishing some ponds lately and found a new frog that I have been killing them on. The Gene Larew's Three Legged Frog has been really good especially when there is alot of moss and weeds. It floats the whole time so you can stop it in between the moss and let it sit there a long time. You can rig it weedless so you don't have to worry about it hanging up. I caught two 3.5lbs in an hour of fishing the other day.

I love fishing a jitterbug or hula popper, later in the summer I usually have good luck with buzzbaits.
Luke, I have to agree with you on the frog, once a pond gets good & mossy it's a killer.

I caught one of them on a Torpedo. They other one came from a fairly new cousin of the jitterbug, (same lip design) called the Hocus Locust. I like the Jitterbug better. The Locust doesn't sit as high in the water. I had one of them for dinner last night. I grilled it on a plate of foil, butter, and a little seasoning. Turned out pretty good.

As for those big Blue Gill in this place, I think I am going to have to break out the ancient fly rod. It's bigtime fun to catch a mess of them on a fly rod. Years ago, just east of Broken Arrow, there was an old rock quarry that was just full of the giant Blue Gill. It was great fishing.
