Talking Northwestern Oklahoma

I know this is a crappie forum but I wanted some info from my fishing brothers of Ok. My son is looking at Northwestern Oklahoma state College at Alva. He's a sophmore at a J C in Mo. and is being recruited for Baseball from several Colleges. Its a 8Hrs away and before we make the trip I'd like to get a few local opinions on the school. Is it in a nice area, safe, and did anybody attend the school. Is the school known for its academics. Any info would be heplful.

Thanks
Randy

I can't tell you anything about the school. I have never even been to Alva but I can tell you that is a very rural area. I would have to think it is about as safe as you can get as far as violence and crime. The only thing I could think of that could get him in trouble is maybe boredom. Hope someone with some real insight can help you.

Hey Bad,
My son plays for MidAmerica Christian in Okc. They play against NOC and a High School classmate of my son went to NOC last year. I will ask him about it and let you know. I understand what you are going through. I think the other post is right the biggest problem will be boredom because it really is a rural area.

It's most definitely in a safe area. I know a guy who coached men's basketball up there for a long time and he liked it up there quite a bit.

Coach Bay is a good baseball coach. I know he was at Bacone for a bit and can coach and he's new at Northwestern.

I don't know a ton about their academics but I don't think it's a bad academic school by any means. Probably average or so.

I would advise to take the trip and see if you like it or not. The Northwestern part of the state isn't for everybody. There isn't a ton to do up that way but that'll keep kids out of trouble too for the most part.

Not a big town, approx 6000, but very nice and friendly. Good school and good people. I wouldn't have any problem with my son going there.

I hope your visit goes well, I grew up just south of Alva, most of the kids I went to high school with attended NWOSU and have some pretty good jobs. Academically I would say that they are equal to about any other school in their size range. You can count on very little crime and some of the nicest people. If people are waving at you on your way up there, don't be bothered, people up there wave to everybody as a courtesy.

Default Farm Country

Farm Community. Lot's of kids have known each other forever up there and it can be clannish. However if your son makes friends they will be lifetime friends. He would have to use a lot of wisdom as wanting friends can push these people away. I know folks up there and there is a lot of good hunting in the area. Wild Turkey, Deer, Pheasant to name a few. Friendly people just clannish. Once your son was accepted he would have a place to hunt forever and friends for life. They are very strong on work ethics, as in getting out there and busting your butt. Again it is a farm community.
