In revererse order....just to keep ya'll guessing:

Speck - The square root of chartruece is high yeller....not high yellow. That trips a lot of folks up that don't know to carry the naught.

Triton - Can't really say that I know the answer there. Only ever bought one chip and that was for a Garmin. Prolly best to post this over on the electronicals board. Trouble is one chip is the best for your home lake in many cases and the higher the cost might not mean the higher the detail on your particular lake.

Billbob - alas, but I only know what I've read on the HD units. I'd go with the factory settings, then turn the ping all the way up and the sensitivity to 85% as a starting point and play with it from there. On the light, I'm guessing if you quick punch the power, the light will come on low, again for medium, again for high. T4th will turn the light off. Least all the Lowrance I've used were like that.

Man, I'll bet this was a boring place before I got here.

A lot like the old Wannabe... except with fewer bad words. And Karate chop action. But, yes, still purtier than you.

I haven't got the chance to push any buttons on that HDS yet, but -

the light he's talking about is the backlit Lowrance logo (about a foot long)
on the BACK of the unit Didn't know they had such until I saw it.

I have gathered that we need to do some software updates on it,
unreal how complex this stuff is getting. New version is something like
2.XXX.XX.XX or some such. Whole buncha decimals in it.
And get this - said on Lowrance website it might take up to an hour to
download the update on my connection. 7-8 hours on dial-up
About ready to holler uncle on this stuff.

I'll give 'em this - they are starting to make a H'bird 997 look absolutly simple,
like one of those "one button" push n play entry level df's
