my thoughts are that for my purposes the Helix 7 would have served as good as my 999 for 500 less.
Crappie bite twice a day. 15 minutes before I get there and 10 minutes after I leave.
The two loudest sounds are a gun that goes bang when it is supposed to go click and one that goes click when it is supposed to go bang.

Couple of things to keep in mind. Transducer and speed.
Transducer for SI in the Helix won't be near as good as the HD one that comes standard with the 999 or 1199 and not as good as the one that comes standard with the 899, wish I had done the upgrade and in hindsite I would without question.
Speed: With SI speed is critical, at 1.5mph you will not get good returns like you will at say 5 mph. You will be able to see some cover and structure at the slower speeds but not as good and the slower you get the less it will benefit.
Wonder if these units will accept the 999 transducer and is there a transducer swap program available for them????

The Helix is a nice unit for the money. May not network, but for the price, it's hard to beat.

    Never looked. Dunno.

Might be for an external antenna or sumptin. Like I said. Dunno. Anyone have any thoughts on the new hummingbird helix?

Just my opinion, but with your eye problems think I would save my penny's and get the new 7 series helix. Have seen no negative reviews on the helix unit. Have seen posts of screen shots from the 5 on DI and SI that were better than most 8 and 9 series units for a lot less money.

My bet would be for factory to plug into for diagnostics.
