Exclamation Would you drive 55 mph

I just was reading Yahoo news, an ran across this. Senator John Warner want to lower the national speed limit to 55 mph. to save gas. That is what happen back in the 70s during the oil crunch. Something to think about.

60 would be fine, interstates/turnpikes should remain 65-75.

Only thing 55 mph is going to do of significance is going to put more dollars in states hungry little hands...from speeding tickets...........I think IL is 55 mph already and its a giant speed Trap. Also i think California make 18 wheelers go 55.........Thats a real bummer when you got 80,000lbs wanting to roll.........down.....a mountain range..........talk about engine brake ala mode!lol

My cruise control sets at 58 MPH. You will have to pass me, I am prone to saving money and smelling the roses as I go where ever it is I am going. I have done it for years.

In my younger days, I would say no way I'm still putting the hammer down, but now that I have a family the cruise would get set between 57 and 59. The state won't be the only one making money from speeding tickets. More tickets=Higher insurance premiums=more commissions for agents . A lot of our roads and bridges are in tough shape, if the extra money went back to improving roads and bridges there's another reason I would be in favor of a 55 mpg limit. I think there could be multiple positives from lowing the speed limit other than saving oil. I haven't done much reading on this so the question I have is how much difference would changing the speed limit really have on oil consumption/the economy and would that be enough to justify the change?

I just don't think 55 mph speed limit will help the average joe very much...........If it would lessen the huge deficient this country is facing in 2009.............i would be all for it...

I have nothing against driving 55 mph but... when Im driving 1000 miles to get somewhere in one day it just doesnt work too good. I think a better solution to our fuel problems is to make the cars more energy efficient than they now are. So if they do this speedlimit thing again then where are we. Later if fuel prices retreat then they will up the speed limit again and what have we got. Nothing. Back to where we started. Im ready to see something new come out of our govment and not the same stale croppie stuff of doing essentially nuthang!

The only ones that should be forced to a 55mph limit should be the ones designing cars and trucks that the rest of us buy and drive. It would not take long before they would design vehicles that could pull a boat and still be energy efficient.
