Why go with a sand filter? I would think you would get better results with a cartridge type filter. Check out troublefreepools
Any pool owners on here? Not sure where this goes.
I'm working on converting an above ground, 16' x 48", intex type pool.
Scrapping the little a/c cartridge filter. Replacing with a sand filter, adding a salt water generator, cutting in a skimmer.
Other than not doing this, any tips? Advice?

Cheeseman - went with the sand filter to make vacuuming easier, get better / more flow, cheaper in the long run. I was getting tired of cleaning and replacing the a/c cartridge filters. They're not cheap. Plus that little pump wasn't very powerful.
Several years and houses ago, we had a 24' pool, with a sand filter, it was great.
I got the skimmer cut in tonight, everything hooked up. Refilled with enough water to backwash the filter, then run it, to verify it works.
It was not an easy feeling, punching holes for screws, and cutting a perfectly good liner! Reminded me of cutting a hole in the floor of my boat, to install a recessed tray. It's not normal!!
With any luck, tomorrow night, I'll the salt in it and mixed. Then Saturday, turn on the salt generator.
Crappie pappy - no problem. Thank you

Well if you cut the liner wrong you can always Gorilla Glue it together! Thanks for the info. Our pool is inground. Those have their own issues. I recently go finished chasing down a leak. Let me know how the salt chlorinator works. We have been considering converting over to salt.
Will do. We bought the salt generator used, from some friends. They loved it. They sold it, and the pool, as they went from a 15' to a 24' abg, also going to hydrogen peroxide. They're supposed to get it installed in a week or two. I'm curious as to how that works.

All the time spent working on it is damaging my fishing time!

Got it all hooked up. I'm liking the sand filter. Chlorine is still high from shocking it, after startup.
Funny sequence here - during startup, vacuumed it. Next day a field by our house was tilled and planted, last year it had corn. That night had high winds and a storm.
Woke up to this -
Which amounted to this, for the entire yard -
That's a 5*10*2' trailer, full of chopped corn husks, stalks.

That's good compost. Hope it didn't get into the pool.
