Need some advice. I just started a bathroom remodel. The shower stall and throne are light blue. I really hate it and would like to go with white. The throne is a simple replacement, but the shower is a different story.
I know I can tear out the old one and install a new one, but I am considering my budget here. I have seen a few refinish kits on the internet for porcelin(sp) tubs, but nothing for fiberglass except paint in aerosol cans.
So anyone know of a good refinish kit for 'glass or am I going to have to change the shower?
I would replace it. But you would get better info from a Plumber lol. Terry
I've never refinished fiberglass and don't know anything about it, but I have replaced a couple shower/bath stalls that had been repainted. Not sure what you would use to finish it, but the 2 jobs I replaced ended up looking very bad. The paint on both didn't seem like it wanted to stick very good and that left it with runs and humpy places. Both families got sick of the odd looks and called me. If you could get someone to tell you or show you how to properly refinish one, it would be worth your while to try it, cause like you mentioned-money is pretty tight (for me anyway!). But if there's any way you can handle it, then I would recommend changing them both out.

I went to Lowes to look around today. A new shower stall is about $400. OUCH
They have a product for refinishing tubs and showers. It has to spray cans in it. One can is put into the other, I believe it is a hardener. It will take 2 packages to do mine. Cost is $60. Compared to the $400 plus drywall work, I think I may give the spray stuff a shot and see what happens. Thanks for the replies.

There is not one refinish kit on the market that would hold over time. It would be much better to just bite the bullet and replace the unit, or, take it out, and go with a tile shower. They are labor intensive, but even a begginer could do it in about 3 days and make it look just fine. There are many bargain tiles on the market to be had. The tile saw/cutter can be rented. It took me two days to do my first walkin shower that was 3.5' x 6' using 4" tiles. It looks great. If you decide to go with tile, I would suggest a proper backing like Hardy Backer, or other brand. The water resistant drywall (green stuff) will not hold up if there is ever a leak. Home depot or Lowes people should be able to walk you through exactly what you will need, and how to do it. It's actually pretty easy to do.Originally Posted by Charger4404spd
