My wife and her mother decorated our CHRISTmas tree real pretty in a way that you cant take the lights off without messing it up and having to do it all over again. The lights have been working fine up until we plugged them back in tonight. One string has about half the lights out on the string, but the rest are working, it is either a parallel or series parallel curcuit I guess. I am not good with electrical stuff. Could the plug have one of its two fuses blown or could it be something else. Another string will come on completely for about 2 seconds and then go out and wont come back on, every time you plug it back in it will come on and then go out. Can anyone tell me what might be the problem with this strand, it also has one of those boxes attatched where you can change the blinking of the lights. I tried cycling through the different options, but the lights still go out. HELP HELP my wife might lose her mind.

Yes, if there are two fuses on the light string one can be blown and that will cause part of the string not to light. Now your other problem I’m unsure.

Where the lights quit working on the one string, replace the first light that isn't working. Check fuses and just tinker with them...They arn't rockets.
It could also be just one light bulb is out in the run of lights that are out. Replace each dead one, one at a time. If they don't light after changing one. Use the one you pulled for the next replacement.
Seeker,
Two years ago I had the same problem and purchased a bulb tester from Wally-World. Man did that save me alot of time. There are only two problems possible with the 1/2 string. Either the fuse is blown or any one of the bulds on the dark side have blown. Get one of those testers and check each bulb. My bet is it is a bad bulb. As for the string with the attached box I can't help you, but my guess s the box is bad and you may just have to bite the bullet on that one. Maybe the manufactor of the lights will have a troubleshooting section on thier website. I hope this helps.

Sounds like newer lights,so if one is burnt out,the others should still light. Its not like the old style where you had to take a new light and try it in every socket.Thank God.
1)for the partially lit string, its not the fuse. The 2 small fuses in the plug control each line of a parallel circuit.A fuse is either on or off.Either one being out would cause the entire line to be dead.
2)for the lights that go out after a few seconds.Off hand sounds like a overheating problem in the electronic control box.If you don't mind steady lights, you can cut the box out and splice on a conventional fused plug.
Basically, they will all have to be replaced .sorry,I doubt thats what you want to hear.Might be a good project in July when its too hot to go fishing.
Go to Wally World & buy a new string of lights, put them over the bad string, after Christmas when you take down the tree, file 13 the bad string. This keeps you from not letting up on your Crappie fishing. HaHa...LOL R & R
Rod & Reel I have thought seriously about doing just that. I might as well buy another string and put it over the others. J White, I hear you on that one brother. Cook, I thought the same thing, I figured if it was a fuse, they would all be out. A fuse is either all or nothing. I also thought about the over heating, but I'm not so sure that is it unless it overheated and damaged something already. I dont wanna risk splicing wires and everything on a christmas tree, I aint that great at it and surely wouldnt wanna burn my house down. Birddog, I figure like you said, it is probably a bad bulb. I thought though if it was a bad bulb that it would either be the first or last bulb on either end of where they stop working. I replaced both of them and it still didnt work. I guess I need to check them all like you said. I sure didnt wanna have to do all that. I will end up knocking everything off that tree trying to do it. Oh well, guess I need to learn for future reference.
Most light strands are made up of 4 or 5 wires twisted together, one for each color. If a bulb is burnt out the rest should stay lit but if one is broken or missing it will knock out all on that wire. Is it just one color that wont work? Check for broken or missing bulbs, got to make the wife happy. Mom too! lol
