change of speech topic

My teacher did not seemed to enthused about uions being the topic of my speech. So I thought I might change it to "Why should we be in Afghanistan militarily" We have to have 3 main points for our speech. I do not want to turn this into a battle thread, as to if we should or should not be there. This is just something I might choose and is just for a grade. I do not want to make it personal. She told us when choosing atopic to consider our audience and what they would like to hear a speech on. I thought unions was good, but she did not think so. However she told one girl that "Cheap verses Expensive/wrinckle cream" was a good topic. Now the class is half guys and half gals and I do not know a single guy that would ever want to hear that speech. Only if his wife is so ugly she might need some of it. So can i get some suggestions for reasons we should be in Afghanistan? Thanks everyone who has been trying to help me.

Well the one reason I can think of is that We need to finish what We started. We can't let that place turn back into a breeding ground for terrorist. That place being a breeding ground is what got us in this mess to start with. Whether it has been handled right is another topic altogether. We have helped them set up a government but it is a very hard thing to do when there are many tribes there with their beliefs on how the country should be run. It should also be stabilized to help keep Pakistan stabilized. I see that country as even more important at this time because the have Nukes and if terrorist get a hold of the Nukes, they will use them on us. It is a scary situation over there. That is for sure. crappiefarmer, thanks for that input, that was going to be my main focus, we cant let terrorism gain ground there with Pakistan having nukes. I have thought of two other points, tell me if you think they are good. Number 2. (Suppression-The Value of equal rights, opportunities, and participation.) This is due to how they view women-Afghan women and girls need freedom and equality.
The lack of health care and education makes Afghanistan one of the most dangerous places to be a mother with one in eight women dying from pregnancy related causes compared to one in 4,800 in the U.S. Most women remain ‘invisible’ and do not participate in public life. Although one million girls returned to school in 2002, some are still being attacked by militants who believe they should not be educated.

Point 3. (Opium Trade) Afghanistan is responsible for 90% of the worlds opium or heroin trade.

I think these are some good points, and you know the females will be interested in hearing about equal rights.

One question I have though is this. We are suppose to start out with a bang right off the bat, something to grab peoples attention to make them want to listen and to give meaning and reason to our speech. We have to use a powerpoint and she said our first slide could be the Bang. I was thinking of showing a picture of the world trade center with the planes. However, some people may be offended by it because they just dont want to see it anymore. Do you think it would be negative or positive to use this picture?

How long is your speech supposed to be?

When I did similar speeches in college, we had 5-7 minute time limits. I don't think you can do a decent speech on "why we're in Afghanistan" in that time frame. If you have more time, that's a different story.

I think they should have book covers made with those pictures so we will always be reminded of what happened that day. Those pictures should be on bill boards, milk cartons, any thing else we could post them on. The bastards invaded our country man!!! I know you said you didn't want to make this into a "battle" type thread. Those pictures should "Pee" Americans off and keep them fighting mad; not offend them. Screw any of them that it does. This makes me want to go buy a Toby Keith albumn.
