Its ludicris to think that someone would just deny flu vaccinations to the healthy elderly because they are less worthy of health care. The fact is, they are the least likley to be infected and untill we have enough vaccine we must ration it. I would gladly give up my spot if it would help younger people. I will have to apologize to you for dragging in the political loons and making it appear that you were one of them even though there are plenty of politics involved in and with the whole health care issue of today. Especially since your postings on and about the flu vaccine were exactly spot on as to the workings of viral shifts or mutations and how ones immune response will fail to recognize specific viral antigens and not have the appropriate antibody response for protection.
I've had a back ground of 20 + years working in the production of various bulk animal viruses used in the final preparation of animal vaccines. These viruses were produced on various tissue culture substrates using either glass povitesky flasks or nine liter glass roller bottles which aren't used anymore since plastic single use vessels are what is now used and other more advanced production techniques I'm not aware of now being retired and out of the loop since 2000.
Some of the viral antigens produced where rabies, Bovine IBR and BVD, Canine distemper, Canine hepatitis CAV-1, Canine parvo, Porcine parvo, Equine encephalomyelitis types Eastern, Western and Venezuelan and Feline leukemia. The final vaccines varied from being a modified live vaccines and a killed vaccines depending on how the particular vaccine was developed and and how the production outline was approved.
The substrates used for virus production varied with using primary kidney cells from pigs, cats, dogs, rabbets and chick embryo cells. Eventually the production cell substrates used were from various cell lines which offered the advantage of not having other adventitious viral antigens that might be present with in the primary cell lines used for virus production.
Anyhow I've gone on long enough here only because you are the first one on CDC that I thought just might have the slightest inklings of this post's ramblings where my other posting was just an attempt at stirring the pot.
