    Default Graphics card

how does one know when it is going bad? My monitor goes black sometimes..it stays powered on. Or could it be from overheating? I do hear the fan running. I just cleaned it out about 3 months ago.

Fishing, I could still be the monitor OR the video card. Often the cards will have heat sinks in addition to a fan. Dust on the heatsinks will drastically reduce the effectiveness of the cooling despite the fan.

    I'd suggest 2 things.
    1. If you feel you are able: unplug power from the computer, open the case, using a small paintbrush and vaccume (plastic pickup tube), brush and vacuume any dust/dirt that may have collected inside. Especially pay attention to the fan and heatsink under it.

    2. If you have another monitor, swap them out for a few days to see if the issue stays with your pc. If it does then it's likely the monitor, otherwise, the issue is with the monitor.

One time I had a problem with a monitor and it turned out the video driver had become garbled. It was corrected by just downloading another driver off the net. Hopefully that might fix your problem cheap and easy.

Could be anything Pox. I still use Voodoo 2, and Nvidia Geforce cards from the 90s(play old games). I would agree on cleaning. About once every couple of years I fully strip down my machines and haul it all out to the garage, fire up the air compressor, use a rubber nozzle and give em what for. Had to do it to lap top here at work this week, amazing how much better they run.

I'd bet your monitor is going. However, Google your specific problem and see what turns up. Plus, check it against a different monitor and see if it does it then.

I just had to replace my Dell monitor because of the very same problem.

Um... well, My monitor goes black too, but that is because I have the power saving settings set to turn off the signal to it after a few minutes of inactivity.

Has someone changed the settings? Screen saver? There is a blank screen saver in most versions of windows.

How old is your monitor? Five years or younger and they usually have a message that tells you when there is no signal from the graphics card. In other words, if you just plug in the monitor without connecting to the PC, then you get a 'No signal' message on the monitor.

Double check your connections and reload your driver. If you haven't cleaned out the inside of your PC case in a while, do it. Heat will kill the machine after a while. Pay special attention to what has been mentioned, but also to the power supply and its fans. Those things are dust magnets.
