Default Any Linux users out there?

Definitely sick of windows and microexcuses. I'm committing my life to open source now, I've been working with the Ubuntu distro but wouldn't you know it hates the only machine I'm putting it on. Burned 3 different ISO formats, none of them work. Someone, anyone- talk to me.

Did you select the menu option to verify the CD before using it to install from it? I am using Kubuntu and have been running Linux close to 10 years now, much has improved. :D:D

What formats are you doing, CD-ISO, or DVD-ISO?

I experimented with linux around 10 years ago because I was sick and tired of windoz. Successful then at installation, but due to lack of software, eventually quit using it.

Now with ubuntu, its as easy as installing any os. I often think I will go back to linux, but have been dragging my feet.

10 years ago, you had to do everything.......and I mean everything; reformatting the disk, partitioning the disk, setting up all the peripherals, and manually setting up the entire system. Now it does it all automatically..... sigh...

I have been windows free this year, my old Quicken that I have been using for years now runs well enough with wine and that was the only reason I was booting windows any way.

I think I've narrowed it down to my hardware. I have one of those fancy schmancy new multi format dvd/cd burner readers. The current iso I have on disc worls on any other machine, so that narrowed it down a lot. The objective is to get windblows out of my life and quit paying for everything. Put an end to activation codes just for updates etc. windschmows sucks.

You may be right on the new fancy dvd/cd player being the problem if it runs on other computers. They are doing pretty good at get drivers for the new equipment fairly quick.

If you had an older one laying around you could install it as the first CD player and then boot from the CD.

Ok, the latest is this: I have a SATA drive for a burner/rom. I go back to my IDE drive burner/rom, still got nothing. So I opt out on Ubuntu, and try another distro. Mint, is another drop in replacement for windblows. Mint doesn't execute either with it's current release, and again it's looking for wubi.exe which is what Ubuntu left me hanging with. I decide to steal and run wubi.exe from Ubuntu, suddenly Mint fires up. But I can't do an install, so I run Mint as a "live disc" (bootable), reboot, poof- all is normal. Mint installs replaces my Xp pro pile of crappie.

I have to say that Linux Mint is so far, superior to Xp pro. Xp looks like something made in some high school science project. Linux on my Athlon dual core executes interrupts and programs so fast it's literally instantaneous. Mint is definitely professional in appearance and performance. As far as install goes, it's way easier than windows ever was, far faster too. Formatting, partitioning, and saving files took seconds vs. the good half hour it takes with windsucks.

I have been very happy with Linux for several years. Glad to hear you got it loaded even though it is strange how it loaded.

I have even booted my two dual core computer at work with the live cd to see what the speed was like versus XP. It was fast on linux. I do run it with virtualbox on it now to do a few things things I need to do.

Well, Mint wasn't in my 1st round draft picks. And I have heard so many conflicting stories on Ubuntu now I'm actually glad I couldn't get it to load. So I am looking at Mandriva and Slackware as other possibilities. I'll run Mint for maybe 30 days and see how it goes. So far so good, and I am blown away at how much better it is compared to Xp. I'm still exploring the screen savers, amazing. So far my only problem is the useless Linksys wireless adapter which didn't really work well with windows anyway, wouldn't you know it's the only model for which there is no driver for Linux. Oh well, I've been meaning to upgrade, no time like the present.

I am hard wired to the router with mine since my desktop is beside the router. I had another computer that I had a wireless adapter that did not require drivers that my son started out with on Linux before their wireless drivers really got going. It was a little more expensive but it sure made it easier.:D
