I caught a disaster fixing to happen on my Cushman 72 volt cart not long ago. Sulfur smells alerted me. Batteries swelled up and hot. On board charger, similar to my boat. Since then, I don't keep nothing hooked up to a charging system, auto or not. Plug them in when I need them, or know something is about to happen, hurricane's, etc. If a sudden event happens, I've got the resources to jump-off the system.
I know that they're are several companies that sell auto charging units, Minnkota, etc. But, their components are made by various manufacturer's. They just put them together. Better safe than sorry is the way I roll, even if it takes more effort.

All battery chsrgers do not work the same.....i have tried many different ones. Been using a MinnKota automatic digital charger the last seven years.....i check the water in batterys ever 6 months and top of with distilled water....i keep my charger plugged up 24/7 when not using the boat...my batterys are 7 years old now and still doing fine....i checked and topped of the water last week....i looked down in the tops and looked at the plates and they look great....still straight and still clean.

The generator folks are here now. It was a bad charger that caused battery to explode.

Glad you got it figured out. Sometimes if a battery has not been checked and topped off your battery level can drop down below the plates and in this condition a lot of chargers wont cut off....they keep trying to charge this can sometimes mess a charger up....and it can also mess a battery up, and or both.. The really good chargers have temp sensors and will cut off when heat reaches a certain temp. A lot of chargers do not have that.

This charger does not have a temperature sensor. The maintenance guy said they had been asking the engineers at Cummins Onan to add one, but had no luck. It certainly needs one!

George the charger in my camper is like that....no temp sensors. The MinnKota 330D that i have in my boat has them for every bank.

I noticed that when the generator guy pulled the cover off the transfer switch box a red light was visible at the single bank charger. I assume it's like my boat...red when charging, green when fully charged. It's worthless to have an indicator light that can't be seen unless the cover is removed. I think I will make a window in the cover so I can see the light every time I walk by.
