Local Pond Crappie
Fished about a 10 acre pond yesterday and caught 13 nice crappie. Caught'em all longline trolling triple ripple jigs. Two were pushing 2lbs., the rest about a pound or better. The guy fishing with me was trying a tandum jig but didn't have much luck.

Can you explain to me how you were trolling in terms of amount of line you let out, weight of lure and depth you think you were fishing? How fast do you go?
Glad I could help

Hello Wasabi. I was using a 1/32oz jig with 2" triple ripple bodies on 4lb test. On the rod (10')that I threw out the furtherest (50' -70'), just the jig, no additional weight. On the second one I put on a medium sized split shot up 2' from the jig and fished it maybe 40'. On the third a larger split shot fished 25' -30' behind the boat. Water depth where we fished ranged from 10' -15'. The one with no weight is not a problem, but the other two you'll need to fine tune your speed (around 1 mph) and lenght of line out to keep them just off the bottom. I also used crappie nibbles. Acid rain with black head was the hotest on the long rod. Cabelas makes a rod that's on sale in thier bargain cave that's the best rod I've ever seen for trolling like this. It has plenty backbone but the most sensitive and limber rod tip that I've ever seen. This lets a crappie grab your jig and not feel hardly any resistance while he's swallowing it. I have two 12'ers and two 10'ers that I use in my 8 rod spread when on a bigger lake in my crappie boat. They always catch more fish.

Wasabi I forgot to tell you, but the name of these rods are Cabelas Crappie System Rods. They also have an adjustable reel seat which works good getting your reel away from some rod holders. Just have to be careful not to break those skinny rod tips.

Thanks, Sea-sons! I am going to go look at those Cabelas rods. I need a couple long ones. I tend to use my 5 and 6 foot jigging rods for everything, but can see how a long rod would help with trolling.
The few times I troll it always seems like my jigs are pulling up towards the surface. I will experiment soon and really pay attention. I am sure I can slow down until i see them dragging/bouncing bottom just to be sure they are getting down there.

Don't know where you are located but Monk will be doing some seminars at the various fishing expos. Raleigh's is this coming weekend.
These shows are a great place to pick up gear from local vendors vs places like Cabelas.

hey where is this pond at? is it a private pond, i ask because i only have a 12 foot jon boat with trolling motor, so hard to get on the bigger lakes

jimbob--Jordan lake has a good place for a boat like yours. Straight across from the Ebenezer boat ramps is a causeway. On the opposite side is a much smaller protected area that is not accessible by larger boats and has a small access road with parking lot. You can back down to the water, slide your boat out of your pick-up and off you go. I've never fished it, but have seen guys with a boat like yours out there a number of times.

Actually the pond is on a golf course that I used to be an owner of. When I sold my part I retained lifetime rights to play golf and fish for free. Fish alot more than play golf.
