Fished about 2 miles out near Corolla on 12/29 and caught around 40 20-30 lb stripers. Had the fish to ourselves. Went back on 12/30 and it was too calm! Lots of boats made tohe 40 mile run and were running over the fish everytime they'd try to chase bait to the surface. Only boated 7.
Now that sounds like some fun there. Think they are heading to OI this year. They havent made it down here in a couple of years. At least gas is cheaper if you got to go get them.
Just got back from Hatteras Island, no stripes south of OI. Last reports were they were 6 miles offshore so no one was going out to fish. Glad someone got some!
I don't fish because I want to, I fish because I HAVE to !
Moma tried real hard.
It seems like the past few years very few have made it to OI. Ocean temp was 50 and it seems like around 40 or lower is when they tend to move further south. It takes some cool weather to drop the temp of the ocean.
Rudee Inlet was a lot more user friendly than OI.
The fish were between 1.5 and 3 miles off with some further out but we wouldn't cross the line. I didn't see any birds near the surf on either day's long ride.
oh yeah, the OI boats were fishing with us. We were around the midway point of the two inlets.
Thats still a long run, and with OI, you never realy know what kind of weather you will get to cross that bar till you get there. I've seen it go from OK to dangerous is just a few hours. I herd of a boat going down(sunk) new years eve, was awfull windy then.

OI with a nice Noreaster is a site to see.
OI will seperate the men from the boys....or maybe the wise from the stupid....great place for natural selection to happen.
Rudee Inlet was not bad. It was a bit choppy with a NE wind on 12/29 and a 20 Carolina skiff followed us about 30 miles S. Saw the same guys in a 21 Parker the next day and they said it took them over 3 hours to get back. They couldn't run but around 10 mph. Not too smart got to always remember a head sea is worse than a following sea when planning a trip.
Good catch! Were you trolling cranks or bait?
