it's okay in most lakes in NC, you should check first, like Oak Hollow in High Point it is illegal, and I believe in some of town park lakes it is the same. High Rock is permissable as long as you tell everyone on crappie.com where you sank them and we promise not to tell anyone else!! :-) GPS cordinates would be appreciative! just kidding about that! Good luck!

I asked a Wildlife Officer about putting Christmas Trees in Lake Jordan and I was told that it is technically illegal and that the use of concrete blocks causes problems when the water levels are down.

Does anybody know of anyone ever being fined (or caught for that matter), for sinking brush in a corps lake?

We asked a corps guy and he said don't do it, but I was wondering if anybody had actually had their hand or wallet slapped after being caught??

I also have wondered if there were more government "eyes" out the first couple of weeks in January with all the Christmas trees laying around looking for a new home,,,

I understand that it's rarely enforced but then again no one was enforcing boat trailering laws two years ago either.

Collect the trees and wait til the needles fall off. It's alot easier to sink them since the needles are full of air. The cover of night helps as well. WRC man doesn'r condawn it but said he has never fined anyone for it. Haven't sank any in a while but all my old holes have either been found or have decayed. Good Luck and don't forget the orange bouys to mark them with :-).....

some lakes have their own rules about sinking trees as attractors but in general its not illegal.

just copied this from the NCWRC page

    Fishing Techniques
White crappie bite best on live minnows, small jigs and spinners. The best time to fish for white crappie is during the spring spawning season when fish move into shallow shoreline areas. Anglers should concentrate on areas with brush, stumps and docks. To concentrate crappie, anglers will often make “crappie attractors” by sinking Christmas trees and other woody debris. During summer and early fall, reservoir crappie move into deeper water along creek channels, roadbeds and submerged points. The fall can be another hot fishing time for crappie as they move inshore again for a short time.

would they would be suggesting that as a useful technique if it was illegal?

Got caught sinking trees at Oak Hollow. One guy tells me it was ok and the next thing I know I'm getting a ear full from someone else. Oh well sunk a dozen trees before they stopped me. Not sure it will help this lake but its close to home so might as well try.....
