Rhodhiss 04-26-08
Fished Rhodhiss yesterday from 8am to 2pm. Fished 1/32 jigs around trees in one of my favorite coves and caught about a half dozen. Tried long line trolling with curly tails at about 11am for 1-2 hours and caught about a half dozen more. Had kept about 6 or 7 at that time. Returned to my favorite cove and trees with my jigs again now that the sun was up high and did very well. I probably caught another 20 fish and ended up keeping 17 really nice fish for Rhodhiss. They averaged 9.5-11.5", which might not be great on High Rock or Jordan but is definitely above average for Rhodhiss. I have to believe that the 20 fish, 8" limit is helping this lake. I had to leave early to take pictures of my daughter before her first prom. It's hard to believe how fast they grow up. Anyway good luck to all and tightlines.

thats not a bad day at all there chugbug. its time for me to get down there, but with all this rain the past couple days, id think things would be too muddy. im gonna give it till thursday night i think. if weather's pleasant. if not im goin trout fishin. thanks for the report.

Thanks to all. My biggest fish was 11.5" and in fact three of them were 11.5". Crowderj I think that you are right about the mud. I am almost certain that it will be muddy at least down to the John Berry island area. I hope to make it back Saturday if not before. I think that it will be good for the next couple of weeks, but this cold air won't help. Good luck if you go Thursday. I haven't been trout fishing in years. Been thinking of giving it a try again. Where do you go? I used to fish Steele's Creek and Harper Creek alot. Anyway have fun whatever you do. Tightlines to all!

ive fished just about every trout stream in mcdowell and yancey county. some in mitchell county too, and one in madison county. i never fished steels or harper.

Harper and Steeles were always good for me, but that was years ago. The South Toe is about the only thing that I have fished in your area. I have a friend that wants me to take him to Harpers creek. I may give it a try, but it's basically up to him.

Where do you fish the south toe at? Yancey is were I am from and it as been a while since I have fished up there. I plan on a camping trip with some friends some time at Carolina Hemlocks campground and maybe fishing that part. What about the cane river or Bolens creek area? I read a report last year in NC sportsman that had cane and bolens creek rated in the top 10 places to trout fish in NC.

I fished the section above the Mt. Mitchell Campground and we did okay. That's been at least 10 years ago though, so hopefully someone else can provide you with a more up to date report. Good luck when you go and let me know how it turns out.

i havent fished cane creek in 12 years or better. so i have no idea. im sure you could find a few there, probably a biggun or two. i have fished every creek above the black mountain campground, and theyre in there. look to upper and lower creeks, because theyre catch and release. the river is fished pretty heavy, and a lot of kids play in it so its not as good. you may have to hike in a ways, but they can be found.
as far as the hemlocks, i know they keep it pretty well stocked, so you probably could find some, you would just have to fight for a rock this time a year.
