I was wondering what are the best baits (artificial and/or otherwise) for stripers...specifically, up in the Weldon, NC area...that is, what has been proven successful? any specific colors, etc.., etc...I'm planning on going this Friday and would love to catch a few dozen or so!
thanks so much,

I've always used the largest bass minnows that I could find. There is a bait and tackle shop near Weldon boat ramp that sells different size minnows, kind of expensive to buy from them. If the stripers are there in big numbers they are not really picky and will bite large bass minnows fine. Good Luck.
In years past we would use flukes on 3/4 oz heads and 1oz roadrunners, albino, white/char. . last year I used shad that I caught here put them on ice and they saved the trip. You can break the bank buying bait in Weldon!!!
3 inch "lil fishy" lure is deadly everywhere
if at first you dont succeed............drink another beer
Gotta go.......FISH ON !!
I only fish on days that end in"Y"
This past Saturday we purchased "bass minnows" At Colston's Tackle box in Gaston. He is on Rt 48 about 10 minutes from Weldon. 5 dozen "bass minnows" cost 21 and some change...
Salty Super Fluke on a 1/4 oz jig head. For color selection, match the hatch, check the water clarity, check the sky.
You can catch just as many good fish on artificials as you can on live or cut bait that the fish will take deeper.
Knock down your barbs and release them to fight another day.
Viva I see a lot of folks using a pearl white fluke or swim bait.I'm pretty sure the 3 in lil fishie in pearl would work also.I feel you can catch more fish on live bait,I am a live bait man myself,I have caught them on gizzard and threadfin shad, rainbow and golden trout, and herring that I use to bring from SC bait shops ,there about 5 inches long and seemed to work best, but like HOT SPOT says, you will probally have fewer deep/swallowed hooks on artificials.I allways use a 3/0 circle hook but still have a few that swallow it.sam
HEY,,WATCH THAT YELLOW ROD
We usually catch shad at High Rock on the morning we are heading down to Weldon. We put all the live shad our shad tank might carry and also ice down a cooler load of shad for cut bait. We will drift live shad until we run out and then switch to cut shad later. If the stripers are there, a small chunk of shad will usually do fine. If you can't catch you own or run out, their is a bait shop across the road from the Weldon landing that has large tanks of live shad for sale. Bass minnows are also available there and do almost as good. We'll be down there this Thursday and Friday. Can't wait!
I suggest you use someone that knows what they're doing. Looking forward to heading up Friday morning. Lets catch some shad Thurs evening.
Then, the problem is HOW to keep the shad alive for a long time!????
Any suggestions?
