Went to Weldon for the first time today. Took my son, bad dad let him skip school, caught 25+ fish from the creek to the big rock between 1-4 pm only 1 fish between 10 and 1 then they turned on. All on shad couldn't buy a bite on minnows. The locals said it was slow if thats slow I'm hooked.
Went to Jordan yesterday 14 keepers from Beaver Creek 8-12 Ft using 2" purple jigs and a white/chart combo. Thanks for the location and advice have been stationed here for 7 years and that was only the 3rd time I've fished Jordan.
Bad Dad? hahaha Nah... I can't tell you how many times I've thought of doing the EXACT same thing. So far, I've been strong. But, sometimes I really miss the kids being with me on the water.
Glad you guys got into em on Weldon. Sounds like a great day for "hooky".
I'm hoping to hit Jordan this week myself, so it's good to know they are still back there in Beaver Creek![]()
"Be Ye Fishers of Men" You catch them- He will clean them
Thanks for the report Airborne. Glad you got into them. I hear you on the slow thing. I would take that anyday. I find it strange that some report that they do well on monnows and others report poor results. I think it must be a case of timing. When they are biting they are biting anything. And then again maybe not! lol You know you get a gold star in heaven every time you take your kid fishing.
I may make one more trip this weekend...Not sure yet tho... Airborne, if you make another trip up you should try up in that creek a little bit. We went up in there last Sunday. I only caught 2 but there are fish in there for sure! Also I did not catch those untill I hooked the minnows in the tail... don't know if that was what the ticket or not but it was what is was...
Airborne, Welcome and Thanks for your Service!
Can you buy shad at Weldon? Where? How do you keep them alive? Thanks.
Generally they have shad at the bait store there near the ramp. You can see it from the ramp literally. Bring your wallet though. I think shad will set ya back about $8 a dozen. Keeping them alive is another question. Hard to do. Aeriate, circulate, etc... Pray. Use em dead as a last resort.
Airborne, we were also up there. Bought large bass minnows in Greensboro before we left Wednesday night, picked up my uncle in Burlington about 9:00pm, got to Roanoke Rapids lake about 11:00pm, slept in the truck till about 4:30am, tried to net shad for about an hour while getting rained on (caught all we needed here last week), got back to the truck to find 8 dozen dead minnows in the cooler (aererator {sp} died during the night, got more depressed by the minute. Had 3 live minnows and 4 live shad. Hit the river and had 6 in the boat on the first drift with one keeper and now no live bait. We bit the bullet and went and bought about $25 worth of minnows (which was about 4-5 dozen) and managed about 35-40 fish for the day (did catch a few on dead bait/cut bait). This was my uncle's first trip for stripers and couldn't believe when I told him we had a slow day. He had a ball. We caught all of ours from the creek/canal to the first big curve down from the big rock where the willows are on the left. Had a slow but good day! Spent 4 days on the river this year and put over 100 fish in the boat, with only one fish being caught the first day we went up, which was when they were releasing 20,000 cfs from the dam a couple weeks ago.

Take a kid outdoors!
I guide on the Roanoke River. Had two trips this week. Caught plenty of fish both drifting and anchored. Today I had one client. We boated over 75 stripers with numerous keepers and slot fish. I still have a couple of open days if any fisherman are interested. My email is rrfishman@yahoo.com
