Thumbs up Roanoke river/ Weldon 27/28

All right guys pack your stuff and head to the river!!!We fished Friday 6 am-5pm with threadfins,We started at the treatment plant drifting right side there were 3 of us fishing we had our limit within 30 minutes.Fish bit steady all day long we boated around 70 fish mostly still small males with largest a hair over 27.We run out of bait in that tank so called it a day.( Had more shad in another tank in back of the truck ) Water temp as high as 62.4.Sat uh oh bad news spare bait tank battery died during the night so no live shad this morning .Fished same area with dead bait still caught about 20 fish before the crowds got to bad then....uhh ohhh trolling motor crapped out, damn now cant manuver thru the crowds,Oh well be happy called it a day with a total off about 90 fish for about 15 hours of fishing. The crowd to day was unreal but everybody fishing live bait was steadly catching fish. Its only gonna get better for the next couple of weeks in my opinion,So go get em!!! Ohh BTW the water had dropped another couple of feet Fri night top of big rock was exposed Sat morning and also a guy drifting behind us this morning caught a honest 25 to 30 pounder she was a hog for that river.

WOW a 30# hog. You do hear of them occasionally from up there. I think they have the season timed so its closed when those females arrive. She musta been the early bird. I hope I can make it up before they close the season. Just checked the Roanoke water stage and lookes like the have closed the dam up some more. Flow down just below 8K now and the water droped 3 feet. Thanks for the report.

Good Job Hot Rod! Sounds like the right side is holding them steady as always. Too bad about the shad and trolling motor, but like you said "90 fish for 15 hours of fishing" - can't beat that. Still hoping to make one more trip this week, but we'll see.

    Default Awesome fishing!

Congrats on the awesomwe day. I have never fished there. Can I put a 18' bass boat in there? I wouldn't want to tear up the bottom of my boat.
    Gotta go, fish on!

You can easily put a 18 foot bass boat in there. You shouldnt have any problems. Before this year thats all i ever fished out of there. The main thing is do not try to go upriver from landing. Also watch out for the rocks in front of the pumping station stay on left side of the river to go around them. After that your home free for miles trust me you will see the boats from one side to the other just get in there amongst them!

I wonder what there thinking is behind doing this,The fish been biting so slow the first part of this month that there has not been enough poundage taking out?I guess they have a certain # in mind? Anyone know?

Yeah Hot Rod. They have a certain poundage they allow to be taken out. If they "estimate" that # has been reached, they'll close the season early. This year the fish were so slow coming up that the # hadn't been reached. I heard they won't extend it more than about a week 'cause a lot of big females would come up and be taken out. I was wondering if they were going to extend it with the new regulation of the whole river being open the entire season, as opposed to the upper/lower river split season.
