Roanoke? Hope you had a good day down there. Reports seem spotty comming from the lower.
We had a tough day, but a good day... first we had to zig zag up the the river because of all the debree floating including whole tree logs..then when we got the the spot we were at last weekend I could not get the boat to anchor 90 degrees to the current... so after messing around for a while we tried a drift and we drifted all the way down to the mouth of Gardner creek with not one bite....
By this time is was getting close to 9:00 in the morning and we were at a loss as to what to do next.. we even contemplated loading the boat up and going back up to Williamston, and try and get herring at what I heard was 3 dollers a piece.. Well I said to Fishpan lets go up in the creek and see whats what...well that was the key (sort of) We got up in there and fished with big minnows on the bottom and within 5 minutes I have my first striper of the day.. but it was 17"... Next I take my small pole with a rattletrap out and toss it near shore and bang! another striper!.. again short at 17" though. Caught one more short striper on Minnow followed by to big white Perch.. then that was it...
Around 1 we went back in for lunch then went back up in the creek after lunch.... nothing.. nadda.. untill it was time to go.. I tossed that rattletrap accross the creek near the cyprus trees and Bang! This one was a big fish.. I saw it come up as I was fighting it and right bout then is when the circus made an apearence on my boat... I hate it when the circus shows up but I guess fishpan and I were a bit tired and it was what it was.. I ended up loseing the big fish..I tossed the Rattletrap in the same spot on the next cast and another fish hit it but did not hook up... right after that I cast it into a tree... I told fishpan I want that lure back as I did not have any more.. We got it back then called it a day.
Final tally 3 short stripers, two nice size Perch (I kept the Perch)
Those Rattletraps seem to work good. I guess you did ok cause I have heard many say the got skunked. Sounds like there is a lot of water and trash. That had to keep you on your toes. Thanks for the report. Have heard there are some real nice pearch on that lower.
