It'd probably work. You hit the nail on the head re: small limit. If I could catch them casting then I'd much rather feel that thump and a longer fight than just up from below the boat.
Just brainstorming here... But what do you guys think about using your long crappie poles, setup in your front rod holders, for trolling for trout. The line lb. test may be an issue. But imagine having 2 or 3 rods suspending live shrimp just off the bottom and 2 or 3 rods bouncing Gulps along the bottom. As long as you're fishing in 10 fow or so, the long rods should keep the bait far enough from the trolling motor so not to spook the trout. Just an idea. I know, I know, with the new limit you only need one pole. But I'm just wondering if you guys think it would work, and I may possibly give it a go just for kicks and giggles. Chime in.

If I did it the first trout would go around the trolling motor and screw everything up. I like the way you think.
One way to know for sure is Try It !. See no reason it wont work. Keep us posted on it.
Papadave and I have kick the idea around a little, but haven't tried it yet. We did see a guy pulling floats behind his boat in the white oak river back mid November , never seen him catch a fish tho.
Ive seen the guys up in Virginia doing that, they'll run 4-6 rods with soft plastics on jig heads. I have witnessed many trout caught that way so it definitely works.
My sons and I do it all the time for flounder. We bounce a 1/2 ounce egg weight with 18" fluorocarbon leader and circle hook. Flounder hook themselves. We use standard 6.6 ft rods. You put 8-10 mud minnows or mullet or small pogeys out and you get your limit of keepers and a red fish every once in a while.
Monk said he now sells a number of his long crappie rods to flounder fishermen. It should work with trout. Go for it and share how it turns out.
That's the way we flounder fish in the inlets. Seems to always work.
All you guys that do it, ya'll do it from the front? Not long lining right? Wow. I was just daydreaming.
