I recently got some Spyder line and having used it a while I dont think I like it to good. Landed a nice crappie the other day and fortunately the line broke after I had him well up on shore. But as I have gotten hung up with this line I have found that it seems to break quite easily. It seems to be quite small in diameter for 8 lb test and will cast a country mile which I like but dont think the durability is up to snuff though. What line do you like? Thinking Im gonna try something else.
hey FC.. I prefer the Fireline... 8# is great! super strong, but have to use the polymar knot. the trilene know slips.. Line is hard to see at night tho! they just came out with a Cyrstal color, haven't seen any yet.. I also use the 8# while bass fishin'.. works good on both spinning and baitcaster reels.. small diameter with alot of strenghth and abrasion qualities.. hope this helps, but truly just my thoughts!!
Thanks for the info hp. Im gonna try that . It seems like it what im looking for. The spyder line I liked the small diameter but it didnt seem very abrasion resistant. Gonna give Fireline a try.
for saltwater I use the power pro - crappie fishing I use the wally marshall yellow - braided line will pull your brushpiles up - I respool my crappie reels often about evrey 3 months
with my mind on crappie and crappie on my mind -
and if ya'll see Goober later tellem I said duh huh - he'll know what ya mean!!!!!!!!
Fish, You got it right the first time! I use 8 lb. spider wire with the big fish color. But, you have to use a palomar knot. The palomar knot is doubled at all the stress points and it is a must for spider wire OR fireline. These small diameter lines are very susceptable to kinks when you have only a single strand at the hookeye. That's why they break. I also have fireline on one pole as an experiment and it works well too. (If you use the big fish color)
I don't carry a net in my boat and have fished all day with spider wire and could still lift a big fish into the boat, provided of course that you use the big fish color.
You can look up palomar knot on google and there are a bunch of sites that show you how to tie the big fish color on with a palomar knot.
Chief Thanks for the input. I think that my trouble must be that I dont know what that big fish color is. Cause I did use the palomar knot and the spider still broke. I was a bit shocked that I lifted the crappie from the water and walked him up the shore a bit to unhook him and he shook a bit and the line just broke. I also noticed that when I got snaged up on the bottom and went to break the line off it didnt seem to take as much to break it as other lines I have used in the past. It really cast far though and I really like that aspect of it but am a little concerned about it breaking with such a small 3 lb fish on it. lol
I started using the Stren Hi-Vis Gold 8 pound line this year and like it very much. The Hi-Vis is much easier to see when you get bites and also easier to see at night (great for those craps who run with your line and never make the rod tip move). I have pulled in an 8 pound catfish on that line as well. I tried Spider line but it seemed to always get knots in it and on windy days it was difficult to use because it was lighter than air.
I have noticed that about the spider line too about the knots and line twist thing being bad. Thanks for the input tarheel!
used stren flo/bule for year's but have switched to bass pro ecell the 6# will pull up a pile with a steady pull, spooles good with very little memory, cheap also, just my thought's-fuzz

6lb Pline CXXX in fluorescent blue - very strong (easy to straighten out a hook), resists nicks/abrasions, good visibility, and lays on the reel spool well even in cold weather. Almost no stretch (like braid) which makes bite detection easier, particulary if you're fishing deep brushpiles/etc. Little expensive (about $12 for a spool of 600yds at BassPro or Bobcats) but worth it in my opinion. The 4lb is also good for very clear water (have seen times when it does makes a difference), but you will break off a few jigs around cover.
