Years ago I used to fish at Cape Lookout a lot. I quit going about 10 years ago when I just got tired of going since sometimes the weather would turn out to not be as good as it was predicted and it is a long drive and we ran into a lot of problems that would cut down our fishing time. I made a return to the coast last weekend with 2 new friends wanting to catch a coolerful or toadfish like I used to catch years ago. Friday afternoon we ended up with 24 toads. We also caught a bluefish and a 12" flounder, 2" too short. Saturday we ended up with 61 toads. It was almost like the old days!

Please be carefull when eating these fish! I don't know if it is true but I have heared that these fish are great to eat if cleaned the right way. But can be deadly if not. I hear that there are two small strips of meat that is the good meat but there are other parts of the fish that is poison.
I just wanted to give you guys a heads up incase.
I caught one of those in the sound when I was at Hatteras village and didnt know what the he double hocky sticks it was. Ugly thing. I didnt even want to touch it. lol
2 small pieces of white meat on the back bone -have to skin like a catfish - very small pieces of meat - almost like a fish nugget - that is going to be a Christmas time appetizer for us here

They look like big tad poles.
Commercial fishermen help feed the world.
Yes these fish are nothing to look at but all you have to do is cut the skin behind the gills, cut around the fish, then take a pair of skinning pliers and pull the rest of the skin off the tail. Then I take the pliers and pull all the guts out then cut off the head. From here you can leave the meat as is or cut along the bone and you'll get 2 small fillets. I've heard for a long time these fish are poisonous but as many fillets my dad and some others ate nobody has got sick. Also, make sure you wear a fillet glove as you hold the head, their skin is like sandpaper.
there is some poisinous areas in the fish but no worries as long as you just eat those white fillets along the backbone - in apan they have many deaths a year from folks eating poision blowfish - but they eat most of the fish I have been toldOriginally Posted by turkeyfootnc
