I tried circle hooks this w/end. There was a good hook set in the jaw 100% of the time. They were Owner light mutu circle hooks size 6. Fished Robeson Creek early Saturday (should have went to Farrington) 8 caught only two keepers 12" Has any one else tried circle hooks for Crappie.
Last spring a friend of mine who usually only fishes at the coast came up to fish the crappie run. (Evidently they only use circle hooks on the coast.) He very successfully used circle hooks for the crappie. While I was deep throating 1 in 5 because of how agressive they were, he caught all of his in the jaw. The only reason I haven't switched over is that I am concerned what happens when you catch a 2 pound paper mouth and only hook them in the corner of the jaw. The flip side is that every tater chip he caught was released in mint condition.
Some of the time I use these on down rig rods. I don't see any difference in circle hooks or the aberdeen.

The only thing I have against circle hooks is that they catch the fish in the side of the mouth. Bad for crappie if you have a slab. I want mine hooked in the roof of their mouths. I use tru turns for that reason. CF

2011 NWR Bash Yellow Perch Champion
Percidae Papermouth, enjoy the trophy. It will see NC again.
I use jig heads and tube jigs and never let them run with it. As soon as they thump. I set the hook. 95% are hooked in the bony part of the roof of there mouth and I almost never deep hook one. But you gotta have a hold on your rod to do that.
