Well first off I want to say that as of October, 28 2006, I have been posting on Crappie.com for exactly 1 year. I have learned a lot over this past year. Saturday night on High Rock Lake, this “Yellow Perch Fisherman” from up North, learned that he has a lot to learn! No matter what the excuse though, the fact of the matter is we got our behinds handed to us.
First thing I think I learned Saturday night. The bigger fish are not going to be around the bridges. You are going to catch good numbers of “keeper” sized fish around bridges for sure, but the bigger ones for the most part are going to be in more “open” water. On Saturday night I think I needed to find a good spot out of the wind. This leads me to the second thing I learned Saturday night...
The Second thing I learned Saturday night was GET OUT OF THE WIND! LOL!!! We got anchored in good right at the end of the creek channel with our backs to the wind. We were fishing on the end of a good drop off that Nat pointed out to us. The Drop off went from about 9 feet or so to about 25 feet. I bet on a nice and calm night that would have been a real good spot. Physically we were fine. “Fishpan” and I had windbreakers on and our backs were to it, but that did not stop the boat from moving up and down. I could see the bite ok. My outside pole I had right down to the bottom so naturally I hooked into a big “Thug” pretty quick. Luckily, I was able to keep it towards the back of the boat and away from my other poles. After the “thug”, I caught one small crappie at about 15’ deep. I think the main problem was that the minnows were moving up and down too much. I am guessing that they were probably going up and down 1 to 2 feet. I think it was just too much movement to keep the crappie interested. The fish were there, we were marking them from 4 to 16 feet.
The third thing I learned, and I could be reaching here, but I think the saying that “bigger bait is going to catch bigger fish”may be true. I draw this conclusion more from fishing out in the standing timber on Falls Lake then Saturday night but I think this still holds true. I will be experimenting with this one over the next month.
It was good meeting all of you guys Saturday night!
