You are like a fishing machine dude....
Put in at Avent's Ferry Bridge on the Cape Fear River Today at 1:00PM.
Temperature: 50 degrees
Water temperature: 48 degrees
Total Fish Caught: 0
I have been curious and wanted to check the Cape Fear River to see what sort of fish I might mark on the
downstream end. I knew the water temperature would be alot warmer than the lakes I had been fishing...
but I must say I was surprised to see it nearly 50 degrees. I first checked out the South side of the river
all the way to the Buckhorn Dam and the north side all the way back upstream to the boat ramp. I also
scanned the middle of the river channel back and forth carefully searching for fish.
I went on by the ramps upstream on the north side of the river to the old railroad bridge and came back
downstream on the south side of the river. Again, I also checked the middle of the river channel all of the
deeper holes and trenches that I knew of. I MARKED NO FISH!!! ZERO!!! ZILCH!!! NADDA!!! I did stop
long enough to jig a couple of laydowns in a couple of sweet lookin' spots... lost three jigs... NO BITES!!!...
NO FISH!!!
It was as beautiful, sunny and still as one could ask for and I really enjoyed easing around on the river...
but I was really hoping to have a few good river crappie to take some pictures of... to share with y'all...
but it was just not to be. I did see a few beavers, otters, eagles and believe it or not there were plenty of
river turtles out yesterday lined up on the wood just about anywhere there was sunshine... basking in the
warmth of the day.
I wasn't used to the current in the river having fished so much in the lakes this year so it was difficult holding
my position over the brush and picking the wood apart with my jigs without anchoring or tying up to something...
which I never did... and it cost me three jigs.
SKUNKED ON THE CAPE FEAR RIVER!!!... but I saw everything I needed to see to make my next trip to
the river very soon. On a more positive note... I did manage to see a good mess of crappie on the last
day of 2010... but this is as close as I came to a crappie all day long!!!!
And yes, they were some kinda GOOD!!! :D :D :D
God Bless all of You & Have a Safe & Blessed New Year.

sorry to hear about the skunking Special K. You are the third person who I have seen who was skunked yesterday it just seems to have been one of those days.
I'm not surprised by you're catching only one crappie. I think it's like some of the others said... with the shad dying off from the cold water temps...
all fish species are gorged to the max... and just not biting right now. I feel very sure the bite will get alot better in the very near future.

Thanks for your response and comments barus243. It's only my second skunk flag flown this year... I certainly cannot or will not complain.
Here's the Skunked Award Flag... I wave it proudly with all honesty and humility!!!
Hopefully things are goin' to break loose for us all... just anytime now!!!
