Need carburetor work on 18hp 4-stroke Nissan!!!
Well, I bought my boat in February 2008. She's run fine until now. I feel strongly that the problem is restricted to the carb or injectors. Please let me know if you have recommendations for someone who can tune this thing up! The Crappie fishing can't wait!!!

I am getting in the same shape. My truck's rear end is roaring and vibrating pretty bad. I am nursing it back and forth to the hunting lease, hoping I don't have to put it in the shop before hunting season is over, its my only ride. Its a lot worse when I pull something. And my wifes van don't have a trailer hitch. Good luck on your boat, had to have my carbs rebuilt twice before they got them right on my boat.
Jeremy,
Take it down to Junior at Pit Stop Marine. He can fix anything marine. He's between Fuquay and Angier on 401. Call first- shop phone is 577-0066. If you need directions, call me.
Well I will be the second to tell you that I Dont Know $hort and chief will be the first ...LOL but I also recently got a boat and was having problems with the low speed idle. It was quite bad. I thought it was the carbs. In the process of just looking around to try and learn something about the outboard I ran across a fuel leak at the primer bulb. I had high hopes that that would make some difference but didnt really think so. I put the boat in the other day to just see for sure. I was amazed at how good the boat ran after fixing that leak. I guess it was sucking air. I dont know if that is your case but it seems like it happened suddenly. My leak was right where the primer bulb clamped to the fuel line.
check out themechanics board on the main board, they might be able othelp some. Might be a can of Seafoam might melp too.

Chief,
A bait shop ower on 42 suggested PitStop too...swore by it and not at it. Said the same thing you did. I called Pitstop a month ago and they said they don't touch Nissan. I called a couple other places and got the same story. One place didn't even know Nissan made outboards (which is a bad sign).
So.......
I decided tear into the Nissan's carb myself. I downloaded the carb's exploded view off the net. Of course it was metric, and I didn't have any metric tools except a 10mm wrench. As luck would have it, all the bolts are 10mm. I am definately no mechanic, but I had that carb down to its elemental components. I cleaned every piece, although I saw very little sign that the carb had ever been used. I put it back together and found no extra parts (this, was a good sign). I was able to restart the engine, but could not determine if I had fixed the problem since the engine was not in the water. Looks like I'll find out in a couple days. If you see a 14' g3 sputtering around at about 6.37mph on Jordan, you'll know who it is. I got a can of Seafoam too![]()
Next step: injectors.

Hey crat,
I noticed that you started to have this problem after the heavey rains we had receintly... maybe you have some water in the gas??
Thanks, Redboat.
I think I will use a gallon and a half of gas for a bonfire tonight. I'll get some fresh stuff for the boat.

I've been having an issue with my motor that was tolerable, but getting worse. I thought it was a carb issue too, but ran across that the fuel line going from the tank to the motor was loose on both ends, a couple turns of the hose clamps and it was good as new. Mine was idling rough and then it would lag when you really got on it. It would smoke a lot too when it was cold. What was happening was it was sucking air at the fuel line, but getting the same amount of oil it was always getting so the mixture was way rich with oil and they don't like that. Now she fires right up, no smoke, idles all day and gets with it when you lay on it. If you're carbs looked good, then that probably wasn't the issue. Two strokes have little bitty diaphragm fuel pumps that are very touchy when it comes to fuel issues, unless yours is fuel injected, and if you got carbs, then it's not. Good luck with it. Check your connections real good! Just because it looks good doesn't mean it is good. Let us know what you find!
Hey Rookie,
I checked the fuel line today. It's airtight. I pulled off the fuel filter and noticed some captured debris, but not enough to restrict the flow. I emptied the fuel tank into a bucket and noticed some water in the bottom--so perhaps some new fuel will help. I drained every bit of fuel out of the carb and I am ready to try it out tomorrow. I'm ordering a new fuel filter and plugs tonight--possibly a new fuel tank cap.
Someone told me that timing could be a factor, but I'm not convinced of this since the problem started with some rough idling at launch only. Only recently does the issue persist even after the engine warms.
So far it's been rather enjoyable to learn more about my engine. I could end up taking the whole thing apart and REALLY getting to know my 18hp 4-stroke, but I think I'd rather fix it before it gets to that point!
